04 Dodge Stratus - transmission or timing belt??? Sign In

I have a 04 Dodge Stratus, automatic transmission, about 180,000 miles. I started my car without any problem, I got about a half block up the road, and it would no longer move forward when I pushed the accelerator. It wouldn't go in reverse either. It felt like it wouldn't engage in any of the gears. I turned off the car and restarted it. Still nothing. I left it there and walked back homr. Several hours later, I returned to see what would happen. Now it wouldn't start! It was making a fast clicking sound, but not like it would if it was the starter. So, I don't think that is what it is. It's not out of gas, and I don't think it's the battery either. The automatic windows move up and down and are not sluggish or anything. Could this be the transmission??? Or, maybe the timing belt???

First have the battery tested and make sure your connections are clean and tight. If the battery is bad or discharged, fix that issue first. If you get the engine running, check the operation of the charging system. Low voltage problems can cause wacky issues as the one your experiencing.

Check the operation of the charging system? I'm not really sure what you mean???
I also remembered that a week ago, I was trying to get in the highway and every time I hit the accelerator the RPM's would go way up just short of the red area. Maybe 5000 - 6000 range, but the car wasn't responding to me hitting the accelerator that hard. You don't think this could be the transmission at all??? Have you heard about things like this happening before?

DS said that to the point. The vehicle needs correct voltage and amps delivered and charged by its own charging system properly. You test for all this. IF you don't know how have it done to rule it out.
If just a pulley in the accessory belt driven items froze tight engine might not crank. Removing belt and find out if they spin properly would be called for on to seeing if engine cranks by crank bolt carefully if that is normal,
