same 96 grand am Sign In

96 grand am has been running 2 days. today the check engine light came back on and the car stalls at very low throttle pressure. for instance going through the drive in st kfc. this is the same car that will not read any codes. my thinking is the throttle position sensor but have very little money to just toss parts at it.

Your not going to get anywhere until you find a way to read the codes. You will likely need a professional scan tool as you were advised earlier.

Re: same 96 grand am Sign In

Check the cigarette light fuse, that usually powers the DLC, if not then that's the 1st problem that needs to be traced down.
We will help you but you need to get some basic information 1st or we'll just be guessing and throwing parts at.

The 1st step is to get the codes pulled....

This one uses the 15amp HORN fuse on the orange wire.

Re: same 96 grand am Sign In

not sure why previous post did not do but got d-port working and got code p-1441, manufacturer control auxiliary emission control. what does that mean? is it a part or programed in? car also at first had po-0172, system to rich bank 1 but after reset and short drive it did not come back. the car also still stalls with very light throttle pressure say going through fast food line. this happens even if light is off, about 2 times in past 10 days the light has gone off for a day or two.

Re: same 96 grand am Sign In

You know I have the same problem from time to time.....I've gone back to a thread where I KNOW I replied and it's gone, probably just a glitch with the system.

The code is for a the evap system. It's purging when it shouldn't. Possible bad purge valve or solenoid. Basically what it does is purges the HCs out of the charcoal canister when the conditions are right and the system can "handle" the extra fuel.

If it's purging at idle or low speeds it could give you some running problems & definitely a P0172 or P0175 or both.

I didn't catch if you had a 4 or 6 cyl (probably a 4 cyl if you just got a P0172) but either way, I would probably get a handle on this problem 1st.....

Re: same 96 grand am Sign In

If that part IS bad it's a very simple fix.

While it is a common failure it's usually best to check the system out to confirm that is the problem.

The problem here is, diag'ing this problem requires a scanner with bi-directional controls, a gauge that reads in inches of water and a way to pressurize the system to the correct value.....

So to get all the tools you needs to do this yourself, you are looking at thousands of dollars.....

You could take it in to have checked out, anywhere from $80 to $150.

The part is around $40, but it that isn't the problem now you are minus $40 with the same problem....

It's always a tough call..........

One other thing about diags.....This may or may not be your drivability problem. It's definitely setting the SES but there could be something else going on. But when you go in and do your original tests & checks and nothing else obvious pops out. You have to start with known failures that could cause the problem. Fix those & then retest the system.....

Re: same 96 grand am Sign In

after clearing the codes yesterday the light came back on after a few min, but today i checked them and that one was not their. now it says the map sensor is bad. car still lurches at idle and sporadic while driving. any reason the code would not read today and now the map sensor does????

Re: same 96 grand am Sign In

Like anything....Nothing is 100%. I've had confirmed dead cylinders before that wouldn't set a code...

Actually a Map would be more likely to cause your problem than a stuck open purge valve.....Those MAPs were good for the vacuum line breaking or splitting....check the hose real good....

Re: same 96 grand am Sign In

It should be on the intake manifold area. It's a little rectangular black box with a vacuum line & electrical connecter....

I don't know if the pic is coming out for your? On my end I'm getting a red X for some reason.....tried a few different ones..........sry
