Trouble Code Po411 for 06 Pontiac Grand Prix Sign In

I have a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix with 84,255 miles on it. A few days ago a engine designed light appeared on my dash just as I was about to take it to have a smog test. There didn't appear to be any difference in performance and no engine noise. When I went to have the smog test if failed and gave a Trouble Code " P0411 Secondary Air Injection System Incorrect Flow Detected".
What can I do to correct this.

Re: Trouble Code Po411 for 06 Pontiac Grand Prix Sign In

There is an electric Air Injection Reaction (AIR) pump motor assembly; that supplies fresh air into the exhaust system. This is to help the catalytic converter to heat up and begin working faster after a cold start.

P0411 sets when the PCM (computer) senses that there is low or no air flow from the pump; after the PCM commands the pump on and the air control solenoid open.
There are 62 steps in the test procedure and the need of a by-directional scan tool, to command the PCM to perform certain functions.
About the only things you can do without the scanner is a visual inspection of the pump and the 50 amp fuse. The AIR pump is located under the hood; left of the starter motor. Check it for cracks, piping that has become disconnected and whether there are signs of it becoming melted. If the solenoid control valve is stuck open; hot exhaust gases will enter and melt the plastic pump.
The 50 amp fuse is in the under hood fuse panel.
It’s a fussy little system and you have to make sure that all the components of the system are functioning properly. If they are not; you'll fix one part like the pump; but if the control solenoid is stuck open; you’ll be replacing the pump again.

Can someone list the part numbers for the solenoid valve that is mentioned in the reply.

Also, what was the "fix" to this problem? Part name and part number(s) would be helpful us as my wife's 2006 Pontiac GP has a P0411 code too!

As Dan mentions in his post there is quite a lengthy flow chart to follow that also requires special tools to track this problem down....

There isn't just one part going bad that will set this code. This is a problem in your air injection system and there are numerous things that could cause this code to set....

Even if the original poster came back & told you what part was bad on his system, there would be no guarantee that part would fix your system...

I'm not trying to be a hardazz but there are some codes that DIYer can trace down fairly easily with just a code reader and multimeter and other one that require special tools almost right off the bat.....

I just learned from another board that I posted this on that the Pontiac's emission system should be covered under the 5 year/50K mile emission warranty.

I'll call the dealer tomorrow or Monday and find out before I do anything.

As for "jarring your memory", I don't have a memory anymore (CRS = can't remember stuff).

Actually, I have a photgraphic memory. Problem is, I never got film for it! LOL! My wife says it's overexposed and a ponographic memory! LOL!
