P0401 on 03 Ford Focus- EGR Flow Problem Sign In

I have a 2003 Ford Focus SE, 2.0L 4cyl, SOHC, Engine Code 3, w/ automatic transmission. The check engine light has been coming on for awhile. Everytime it is code P0401. This code represents an egr flow problem. I cannot seem to nail it. I have checked the egr valve, and replaced the DPFE sensor ($140), the egr solenoid??? seems to be working just fine(I think). What should I do next???? Most of the time the light once reset will stay off for awhile, maybe 150mi, but i replaced the DPFE sensor yesterday morning and have driven about 50mi this time and the light is back on with the same code??? Any help right now would be wonderful!

Thanks,

Hmmm. Sound like you have a good idea of what you are doing. I would double check the EGR to make sure it is working properly. With car running pull a vacuum on the EGR to open it. The car should either run bad or die all together. If it dosn't than either the EGR is bad or the port on the intake where it is attached is clogged with carbon build up. The DPFE is the most common problem but the carbor buildup happens from time to time. I don't think I have seen a lot of EGR failures. Just related parts that will trip this code. Ford trucks and crown vics have more of a problem with the carbon but you may be having the same issue. Good Luck

I put a vacuum on the EGR valve and it killed the engine completely when I did it. I would suppose it means its working. Is there any way to test the solenoid? Could that be it. Seems like if the EGR works, and the DPFE has been replaced that it would have to be a solenoid? I cleaned the intake btw. I might not be understanding something so please point it out if it seems like I am missing something? Thanks for the quick reply
