New MAF, All clean/reset, still P0100??? Sign In

2001 Nissan Sentra XE

P0100 popped up, symptoms were consistent with bad MAF (had them before), it was under warranty so I swapped it out.

New MAF in, air filter clean, codes erased, "reset" ecm (disconnected battery for 30+ minutes, not sure if this actually does anything).

Same symptoms and same code P0100, after restart.

Car starts easily and then dies out quickly, quietly and smoothly. I can get it to run if I give it gas, but I can tell it doesn't like it; gulpping air; no bad mechanical sounds.

ECM says it is MAF...

Perhaps another related component? Or other electrical issue?

No, the ECM does not say that.

It says that there is a problem with the MAF circuit which could mean many things beside a defective sensor. It could be wiring, the PCM itself or a problem with the aspiration of the engine itself. There are also 5 different versions of this code.

I don't know what math you're referring to. All you need is a sharp tech that can find the problem.

It would cost less than the down payment on a new car to pay a qualified and properly equipped tech to diagnose and fix your car. As you are now seeing with this, throwing parts at it just because some code came up on it doesn't fix anything it just drains your wallet.

In theory it would cost less to have a "qualified" tech look at it, but the problem is finding one, or rather finding a knowledgeable tech and finding one that is actually honest, not just one that says he is.

Too many times, at too many locations and cities (dealers, chains and private shops) and too many techs have given me the same or similar line of BS, "Oh, yeah, well you see in order to fix the belt on your car we need to rebuild the engine and replace all four of your tires."

Having seen service techs run the same line of BS on multiple customers right in front of me... Person brings their car in for an oil change and low and behold "your battery is dead." "Well it was fine when I came in here," responds the customer. "Oh, well actually it just has a bad cell and it will only cost $180 to replace it. So we'll go ahead and do that," says the kind service tech. And so it goes until the customer has to practical beat the service tech into submission before he will relent and allow the customer to have only the service he requested. Unless it was just a bad day for batteries no service tech gets a line of cars with the exact same battery ailment, when people bring their cars in for unrelated work.

I'm not doubting any of the experts here. You're right I need to find a "sharp" tech and yes it would cost less, but too many people have hung a shingle outside their door that says ASE and then preached that they are God's gift to automotive repair, for most anyone to find someone who is actually knowledgeable about what they are doing.

If ya'll got a section or seen a thread about how to find someone who actually knows what they are doing, instead of some "ASE" certified tech that just replaces and charges you for parts willy-nilly until stuff starts working, I'd love to hear about it.

I feel sorry for truly knowledgeable automotive techs whose ASE certifications have been cheapened by an ever growing pool of ignorant and distrustful individuals.

So that is how that math adds up. And I haven't dropped even one cent on it. The tow was free and so was the MAF.

If that's the way you feel then maybe you should just junk it.

It's not a matter of feeling anything. Experiences speak for themselves.

Doesn't matter what the trade, service or product. If it isn't working out there's a problem with understanding. if there's some motive to excise the most possible out of you for things needed or not that's plain wrong, - T

Did you come here to complain about the automotive trade? There is another section for that. Until you walk a mile in a mechanic's shoes, you have no right to judge. Hate to break this to you, but there are theives in every field. You don't condemn the whole by the actions of a few. Please don't turn this thread into a bashing thread or it will get closed.

Discretesignals, obviously you didn't bother to read the thread.

I came here to ask for assistance.

Hammer Time provide some thoughts, to which I responded with my experiences relating to accomplishing those ends, i.e. finding a "sharp" tech to carry out the required diagnostics.

I even made note that those with which I was communicating here are "experts."

I in no way was condemning the entire trade and even shared my concern for those of you who are experts and honest.

I have just had more luck finding those that are contrary to that.

I find it interesting that you choose to respond in a negative fashion to someone who was simply sharing experiences, instead of exercising the same level of professionalism that Hammer Time and Tom Greenleaf did in simply allowing me my experiences without berating me.

The fact that you took such offense and responded with such disdain makes me wonder...do you have a guilty conscience?

So if you want to take your skull and wrenches and close the thread, so be it. It will simply be all the more confirmation that you are only interesting in doing things that suite your needs...if you're not sure what this means refer to post six (6) above!

As for Hammer Time and Tom Greenleaf I appreciate not only the information you shared with me, but also your professionalism; I wish you the best of luck.

Btw, my car made its way to a shop today.

Let me tell you secret. The ones that lie, cheat, and steal don't last long in this field. I've seen the ones that used the magic pen and they got theirs in the end. The businesses that allow that kind of practice usually don't last long either. You don't know for a fact that when a tech up sells something it is not legit. Maybe that vehicle was slow cranking cause of a bad cell. You weren't there to test it and it wasn't your vehicle. The best form of advertisement is word of mouth and most shops don't want to tarnish that by ripping off their cliental. Some of the larger companies only care about profits and push the techs to sell what they can. If a tech in that situation doesn't make enough time, he/she goes home with a crappy paycheck and also has the company coming down on him/her to start producing hours. Most techs don't want to be in that situation because they have bills to pay and a family to feed. Few are pushed to the dark side because of it.

I've had vehicles roll in the bay for an oil change and if I saw something that needed work, I informed the customer and attempted to up sell it. I'll answer any questions a customer has and show him/her the problem and how I found it if they wish. Another customer, such as yourself, may be watching me talk to that customer and assume I'm trying to rip them off giving them a list, but infact I am informing them what problems the vehicle has and have the proof to back it up. If all we did was just change the oil and didn't tell you about things that are wrong on the car, you would come back later complaining that your car broke down and it was our fault for not informing you of something we should have caught. Most businesses wouldn't make it unless they up sell anyway. You are the ultimate deciding factor if you want something done our not, if it was recommended. If you felt you are are being taken, you can get a second opinion or bring someone along that knows about cars. Just don't assume that every ASE tech you run into is out to get you.

You know, I really don't trust lawyers but i would be pretty foolish to go to a forum where lawyers volunteer their time for free and then tell them how much i didn't trust lawyers.

Like DS pointed out, there are thieves in every business. The difference about mechanics is that everyone needs one at some time so the public deals with them far more often then they would lawyers, doctors, plumber, carpenters, etc. and I can tell you a rip off story about every single one of those trades.

Remember, the ones that pride themselves on not being one of the thieves, take it very personally when someone lumps them all together.

It cuts both ways........Some of the stuff of seen customers do could've & should've landed them in jail. One shop had so many drive offs (customers taking completed cars out of the parking lot with a 2nd set of keys and not paying) that any car with $300 or more in repairs got a club put on it. But because of the actions of a few bad customers, I don't think the majority is out to try to scam me or the shop.

In this field you can break it down in to 2 areas, R&R techs & Diag tech. R&R guys are just that, they are good at removing and replacing parts but really don't understand how the systems work so when they get a car that doesn't have a common failure on it that is when the trouble starts. I.E., they pull a MAF code, replace the MAF and still have the same problem. 7 out of 10 cars, the MAF was bad & all is good, those other 3 are their nightmare cars. They have no clue what is wrong or how to find the problem. And then comes the other part of the problem,,,,they think they are diag techs, so you can't ask them, of course they are going to say they are the best out there.... So best thing to do is ask around to who uses what shop & what kind of problems they had.

As far as these precieved attitudes.......I'm assuming your a honest hard working person, who goes to work and does an honest days work and can sleep at night....Ok....pick a field any field, where a large percentage of the customers who don't know you will insinuate you are dishonest and some will even come right out and say it to your face....do this for 20 to 30 years & then we'll talk......

Nobody (even the thieves) likes to be called dishonest or a thief. If you go into this field, whether you are a tech or writer you need to get thick skin....
