Multiple Codes - 1993 Ford Taurus 3.8GL Sign In

I have a 1993 Ford Taurus (automatic, V6, 3.8gl, 140k miles) that is having a weird idle/stall problem.

The idle is rough, and sometimes when I put it into gear and push on the accelerator it idles down (if my headlights are on, they dim). If I continue to push on the accelerator while it is idling down, it will die. It doesn't do it every time I push the accelerator and it seems to be worse in the cold.If it dies, it won't restart for a few hours.

I searched some forum posts and found a recommendation to clean the IAC, so I did that (sprayed throttle body cleaner through it until it looked clean). But that didn't seem to solve anything. I also cleaned the MAF sensor, but that didn't do anything. I checked a couple plugs, but they look fine. The distributor cap is relatively new (isn't cracked; not very worn). I can hear the fuel pump startup when I put the key into the on position. The air filter is clean. I also tried bypassing the Fuel Pump inertia switch, but it didn't change anything.

I got a few engine codes that may be relevant to the issue(s). The descriptions are from my Haynes manual.

KOEO (Key on, Engine Off)
542 - Fuel Pump Circuit Open; ECA to motor

KOER (Key on, Engine Running)
173 - Oxygen Sensor Indicates Rich Condition, right side
137 - Indicates Rich Condition, left side
129 - Insufficient Manifold Absolute Pressure/ Mass Air Flow Change
167 - Insufficient Throttle Position Sensor change

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

destino; The IAC should be physically removed and cleaned. You'll need a new gasket, of course. These engines were known for leaky fuel pressure regulators which could explain the rich condition. With the engine warm and shut off, pull off the vacuum line going to the fuel pressure regulator. If there is any fuel present, it's bad. The MAF sensor must also be removed for cleaning. Carb cleaner can be used for the IAC, but MAF cleaner should be used for it. Both can be cleaned with the MAF cleaner which is available at most any parts store. The throttle position sensor can be checked with an ohmmeter. Watch for any 'glitches' in resistance from idle position to wide open throttle. From the symptoms, I'd look very closely just off idle. The inertia switch is either on or off. If it were faulty, you'd have no power going to the fuel pump. Does the engine seem to run okay when it's cold? Problems begin after warmup? If so, sounds like a flooding issue, to me.
As one of the other guys mentioned earlier, Haynes and Chilton manuals are good for starting the fire in the fireplace. Mitchell and All Data are what you want.

Loren, what's with that? Am I just one of the other guys? GEEZ! I made that statement and am damn proud of it. Please, give me the credit, for I love to bash Haynes and Chilton every chance I get.

Destino. Another check you should consider is exhaust backpressure. If the converter or muffler are plugged, the engine will have a loss of power when you try to accelerate. You can pick up a cheapy backpressure guage that will screw into the O2 sensor bung upstream of the converter. With the engine running as you open the throttle, if you see the guage starting to climb over the 1 pound mark, you have a restricted exhaust.

Thanks for the quick replies!

Loren, I should have clarified that I did remove the IAC and MAF when I cleaned them (I used their respective cleaning sprays).

In response to your question:
  • Does the engine seem to run okay when it's cold? Problems begin after warmup? If so, sounds like a flooding issue, to me.
    • While driving the engine seems fine (it might not be; but it does seem to have plenty of power), but when I come to a stop and then press the accelerator, it will idle down (lights dim, and it will die if I don't take my foot off the accelerator). If I don't take my foot off the accelerator, and it dies, it takes a few hours before I can restart it.
I will check the throttle position sensor with an ohmmeter.

Again, thanks for the replies. Any idea what the other codes could imply?

Thanks!
