It smells like burning rubber with check engine light on Sign In

I have a:

1999 Subaru Legacy Outback with a 2.1 4 cyl engine with about 150,000 miles on it.

recently my battery died, and I didnt have a charger so I let it run for 2 hours to help recharge the battery a bit. When it was done, the car smelt a little like burning rubber, and continues to smell this way whenever i drive it until it has warmed up. The next day the car began to get overheated (I caught it though) due to little or no coolant in the radiator. I put coolant in it and the car is back to running at its usual temperature again, but it still is smelling like burning rubber when it gets hot.

The smell is originating under the hood and seems to be coming from the middle area of the engine compartment.

In addition to the smell, the check engine light is on, thought i thought that was more because of the near overheating that occured 2 days ago. I have driven the car to and from work 2 days now(15 miles each way on the highway) with no issues other then that smell!

Any help is appreiciated.

Thanks.

I'd take a close look at the belts; Especially the one that drives the water pump. You may have a seized pulley which could account for the smell, loss of coolant (if it's the water pump), ect.
