This has been driving me nuts. I've gotten 3 new caps in the past 4 weeks for my 2006 Monte Carlo LT. 2 were from Auto Zone which didn't fit right so finally went to a dealer bought a OEM one which fits tightly how it should. Now after replacing it on my DIC it comes up saying "Tighten Gas Cap" but only after the car has sat over night or while I'm at work for 8 hours after that it doesn't come back on. I've cleared the code a few times and until I can figure out what to do I won't. Any help for this would be great.

Was it setting the code before you replace the cap?

Re: Gas Cap Code Sign In

There are a few types of evap leaks. Basically small .020" and larger .080". I know Ford was doing this but haven't seen a Chevy yet...... When it fails the small test, it will turn on a "check gas cap" light just for the fact that loose gap cap is one of the common reasons for that code.....

If you changed the cap out with on OE, then you've pretty much done what you can do, other that just looking over all the hoses and would have to take it in to be diagnosed...........

The code came on with the old cap too and with the Auto Zone caps. This one fits fine but its strange since it only occurs after it has sat for a while other than that I can drive it all day after the one time coming on and it won't come on again.

Re: Gas Cap Code Sign In

The evap monitor has to run for the code to set and evap monitors don't run right away. Certain conditions have to be right for the monitor to run.

I haven't looked up the exact conditions for your vehicle but with most, the leak test has to run and fail 2 successive times for a large leak & 3 times for a small leak to code.

Like I said if you changed your cap with an OE one, then it's not a cap problem..... Your message center is just saying cap because it's failing the leak test and the cap is the most common problem. I have mixed feeling about that message, while it is common problem and I suppose it does save people money, it's not always the problem and then causes confusion and wastes money.

There is a problem with canister vent valve not sealing. It's normally open and the PCM commands it shut during the evap test, if it doesn't seal it will fail the test. The valves about $40 buck but then again it should be diagnosed because this isn't the only thing that can cause a leak........

Re: Gas Cap Code Sign In

Yeah when Auto Zone did test the code it came up for gas cap and vacuum leak. So I suppose once I get extra money I'll go have it taken care of. I do have to say it is annoying as all get out. I did check my gas cap and there was gas around it which I'm not sure if that's normal if gas spills up like that.

Jmon; If you have fuel present at the cap, something is wrong. Remove the cap and inspect the metal 'neck'. Could be damaged or some debris keeping it from sealing.

Re: Gas Cap Code Sign In

Thank you I will have to look at that. Everything else said in this thread make sense but knowing gas is up at the cap i figure is the problem.
