EGR valve causes Check Engine message

Hi;
I have a 1996 Buick Park Avenue- not supercharged. Specs for an EGR valve ask whether 8th digit of VIN is a "K" or a "1". What is the difference? Some sources say there is no difference some say it is important.
A new EGR from Buick dealer is around $350 so I tried a used parts place and they said an EGR from a '98 Olds would work fine. I tried it, but although the car runs perfectly, it caused the Check Engine light to come on.
Should I return the part and look for another? What other vehicles would have the same EGR part?
Can I use the '98 Olds EGR and a piece of black electric tape? I've heard that is the fix for many of these codes.

Get the codes, and let us know so we can help you out 
The 98 olds has the same engine EGR valve is the same
when you get a code for the EGR does not always mean its the valve itself
