2016 Jeep Patriot Latitude 2.4L AWD
Pulled a P0339 code for crankshaft position sensor. Actually 3 of the same code. One stating that it needed immediate replacement.
So I replaced it, at great cost to my forearm, and it would continue to turn over, until I turned the ignition key back off. I put the old one back in and it fired up and ran as well as before I began. I had the auto parts dealer replace it as we decided it was probably defective. I installed the 2nd new one and it started, but ran like crap before stalling. I triple checked everything I had done and it was all good on my end.
So to my question, will this new sensor need relearning? The auto parts guy(a self stated multiple year mechanic) told me it didn't, but my research has led me to believe it may actually need it done.
Can anyone help me with this issue, please? I'm at my wits end with this jeep.

You probably need higher end testing of the "circuit" as the code doesn't have to mean it needs to be replaced. Check connector wiring as much as you can.

Defective parts happen but this is too many times IMO it wasn't that item more likely communication with it,
Tom

No such code

There is no code that tells you to replace anything. They merely advise of a situation observed by the computer and it's up to the technician to determine the actual cause of the code.
There are dozens of things other than the sensor itself that can cause the code.

Here are some possible causes of this code. Note that replacing the sensor is at the bottom of the list.
and yes, replacing the sensor does require a relearn procedure.

Possible Causes
5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO VOLTAGE
5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE CKP SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT
5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
CKP SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO VOLTAGE
CKP SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
CKP SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE CKP SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT
CKP SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
CKP SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR MOUNTED INCORRECTLY OR MOUNTING SURFACE DAMAGED
TARGET WHEEL/PULSE RING BENT / BROKEN / MISSING TEETH / EXCESSIVE RUNOUT
CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)

Right. It doesn't say it needs replacing. What it reads is: This fault may pose damage to components and should be repaired as soon as possible.

Which I took as it needed replaced. And now I can't relearn the damned thing. Or don't know how, anyway.

You would need a professional, bidirectional scan tool to do the relearn if that is even the problem. These cost in the range of $5K and up.

I seriously doubt that is your problem because the engine has to run to perform the relearn.

That is just something added by the tool company, not the car manufacturer.

The problem with taking it somewhere, is that we are flat broke. Work has been slow for both of us but the bills keep coming. And, all of our license plates are coming due very soon.
This Sh!t economy/administration is killing us.

Thanks for your help. I really do appreciate it.

Don't blame the administration for your financial mess. We're all living in the same economy

Cars cost money to own and operate. It costs a lot more to be equipped to repair them.

When EVERYTHING has doubled or better in price since the last administration, among MANY other things, I'll lay the blame where it is due
We were thriving under the previous one, and now everything is MUCH MUCH worse, in every single aspect. Our bills were the same, and we still had repairs to do, but the difference is, we had a little extra left over in our checks. Not to mention, they were bigger then. Not a ton, but they were. And now our country has gone to hell, and quite literally. Because we have a cilriminal cabal in charge, who's only concern is fattening he and his family and friend's pockets. Oh, and tanking the economy so his handlers can take over.

Again, thanks for your help.

OK, take your politics elsewhere. This isn't the place for it.
