I recently had the timing belt, pulley, water pump, ect replaced on my contour. The check engine light has been stuck on. I had the computer read the code, and it said that the timing was off. I took the car back to the person that did the work. He says that he fixed it, but the light came back on. We had it checked again, and its saying the same thing, that the timing is off. He says he fixed it period, end of story, as far as he is concerned.

We did find the PCM fuse and pulled it for the recomended 5 minutes, but the light came back on within about 2 miles of driving.

Any suggestions?

I have a 1999 Ford Contour SE
2.0
239.180 miles.

Thanks, J.R.

What is the exact code number stored in the computer? If we have the exact number, it is a lot easier to research the problem.

I'm betting he's getting a PO340 and it's because the guy that installed the belt didn't have the special tools and didn't know what he was doing. I've seen it happen a number of times on that engine.

The code that AutoZone got both times was P1383.

That codes is indication the VCT is over retarded.
That can be a lot of things

Timing belt not installed correctly
Problem with VCT valve or actuator
Low oil, low oil pressure, wrong weight or dirty oil.

Since the problem started with a timing belt change, I'm betting he did not install it correctly. That will happen every time if he's not very familiar with the system or tries to shortcut the procedure.

The OTC tool set to properly time that engine is only about $35. I would hope he owns it and isn't trying to rig something. With HT on this one. Sounds like you need someone who owns the proper timing tools to get this set right.

Everybody thinks they can just mark the old belt and but it back on with no marks but BOY, are they wrong.

Might get away with it on a 97, but 98 and up are VVT and anyone who doesn't know what they're doing will cause more harm than good.

Exactly. My girl's car has sat around since all the parts stores were listing the wrong upper idler pulley in the kit. It was too small and couldn't tension up. Had to go directly to Ford and blow $75 for one pulley to make it right. Ran out of ambition as the midwest is in a heat wave and being from AK I try to hide near cold things when that happens so I don't fall over. So have the parts finally, waiting for the weather to not boil me to get it done and find out if I have compression. Betting I do if Alldata calls it freewheeling and they go right to the source. The woman has been on me about it, believe me.
