I just bought a 97 chevy tahoe 2wd with 5.7 lt engine and 144352 miles on it. I took it in to the smog test place and it failed. I've got paperwork that says it passed in june of 08. they said it failed due to mil/check engine light due to a warning lamp failure. And that is a direct quote off the paper they gave me. It also says fault codes p0134, p0154, p0155, p0161, and p1870. The guy said he's never seen so many fault codes at one time. 4 out of 5 of these codes are o2 sensors and the test said the o2 sensor passed. the only part that says fail says system malfunction light. I don't understand this and don't know where to start to fix it. If anyone has any idea it would be greatly appreciated.

Mike; The check engine light should have been on. If it wasn't, could be a burned out lamp. In WA, you will fail the test immediately if the lamp is inoperative. As far as the O2 codes; You will have at least three O2 sensors, possibly four. Two upstream of the catalytic converter, and at least one downstream, possibly two. Just because you get "O2" codes doesn't neccessarily mean that they are bad. You'll need to get some diagnostics done to find out. This is not something to let go, as it can be detrimental to the engine, the catalyst, and fuel economy. The Vortec engines have problems with fuel delivery, so get it checked out as soon as possible.

I had a check engine light on my 96 ford taurus and the codes given were all four oxygen sensors. Well as it turns out, replacing them (at least in my case) did not stop the check engine light from being on, even when it was cleared with the diagnostic tool multiple times. I had the computer itself replaced and the light went off. It wasn't easy to find a computer of the same exact type, but anyways, maybe that might help you, if you are still dealing with this problem.
