96 lexus ls 400 won't cmmunicate with code scanner

96 lexus ls400 8cylider. this car has over 230000 miles but it runs great, until one day i had the car idling and then it started to run rough. the check engine light came on so i took my obd2 scanner and connected it to the car and the code reader said vehichile is not communicating. i was wondering by it being a toyota made car do i need a special piece to hook up to the reader, or is something else is wrong. i sent it to two mechanic shops and their's would'nt communicate with the car either.

Check all your fuses. This shouldn't need a special adapter, its OBD2 compliant. But you have to have 12v power to one of the pins on the connector. I'm sure one of the guys will correct me if wrong but I think its pin 16. If you don't have power there you won't get communication. You'll have to fix the communication issue before we can troubleshoot the driveability issue.

Does your code reader comply with SAE J1978?

all i know is it's an actron cp9175 obd2 auto scanner.

That reader is powered up off the DLC, so obviously it has power and ground. I'd try a different scanner, to be sure it's not some sort of incompatibility issue. If that doesn't work, then your going to have to test the data bus circuits.
