2005 Envoy 4.2 4X4 97K
Well, the title pretty much says it all. I'm getting code P0014. It came on when the wife was driving home from work. Seems to be running fine and not noticing any symptoms. We're heading to the in-laws in KY Friday so hoping I can get it fixed before we leave. Even if it's okay to drive as is I refuse. I'll be in a pissy mood if I had to look at a cel the whole way down. It would drive me nuts.

Hey MG, how are you doing? Haven't seen you around as much.


Basically that is a VVT(variable valve timing) code for a performance problem with the exhaust cam phaser. The computer is trying to command the exhaust cam to advance or retard and it isn't seeing the change or one that is fast enough. Going out on a limb here, but so far I've ran into that code when the wrong viscosity of engine oil is used or it has faulty hydraulic actuator solenoid. I'm sure your religious on keeping your oil changed, so it probably won't be a sludged engine problem. Is it near impossible to properly diagnose that code without a scan tool.

Hey DS....things have been going pretty good. I've been working quite a bit over the last few months so have been keeping busy. How about you? Life treating you good?
Yeah, I've been using that Mobile 1 Extended. 5-30 It says it's good for 15K but I still change it around 3-4k. Probably overkill but it's only a couple bucks more than the regular Mobile 1. It did get colder than crap here today. The temp actually started dropping once the sun came up and throughout the day. The Envoy sat all day. You wouldn't think so but wonder if that had something to do with it since you mentioned viscosity?
Would it hurt anything to clear the code and let her drive it to work tomorrow? It's about 30 miles roundtrip. Our local GM dealership charges $45 for a diagnosis. Looks like they might be getting a call, huh? Then again, it is Christmas again and HT forgot to send me his scanner as a present last year. Maybe I'll get lucky. Maybe once he gets back from Christmas caroling and baking cookies for all of his customers he'll get it wrapped up and mailed off. Then again, tonight might be the night he rings the donation bell at the local grocery store.

I'm going to guess say it is a bad solenoid actuator, which is easy to change. You can get one from the dealer if you don't mind paying extra. Dorman makes them also and so far haven't had any problems with them.

I been doing good. Been screwing around with the swimming pool plumbing and pump. The old pump let the magic smoke escape, so I got a two speed Hayward pump. I had to install a two gang box with a 2 pole switch and a three way switch with a in- use cover. Also have to rewire the pool light, so it isn't on the same circuit as the pump. Looking for a 20 amp GFCI breaker for the pump, but looks like they are expensive. Never knew there were so many regulations. The pool was installed in the 80's and looks like it was a time when you could do whatever you wanted, so I am trying to bring it up to date. I also got to fix some conduit in the garage that goes to the shed, plus hang up Christmas lights.

Screw you and your pool...lol....Ours has been closed up since September and we even have a heater! Here, I'll say it for you, "closed up? what's that mean? We keep ours open all year here!"


We had a whopping high of 10 degrees today. We usually don't start getting into that until February. I feel sorry for all of the tornado victims. They normally hit us in the spring and summer so at least it's warm when cleaning up. It looks like a warzone and they have to cleanup in single digit temps.


You sure have a nice list of work to do. It's always something, huh? I bet that two speed pump will be nice. I normally keep ours on a timer to save on the power bill but it would be nice to be able to just keep it on low most of the time and crank it up a notch after shocking or heavy use.


All of the regulations are crazy. When doing electrical I often wonder if these manufacturers "sell" their product or idea on the building code inspectors just so it's put into code. They then end up making millions off of their stuff. Even when we didn't have all of the gfci stuff how often did you hear about someone getting the zap? I guess it's better to be safe than sorry.


I am due for an oil change. I might go ahead and change it before throwing the actuator solenoid on just in case. I did go a little longer with the miles this time but not much. I always use the second trip indicator as an oil tracker and the wife reset it not knowing. The change oil light isn't on but I don't trust it. I bet I'm still less the 6k though. If it does end up being the oil I'm not going to trust that Mobile 1 Extended anymore than the regular Mobile 1. Even if it did last that long I wouldn't trust the filter. Since I'm normally notorious for changing the oil at less than 4K I would think the engine would be pretty clean. I'm not sure how well the previous owner maintained it though.


Is there another name for that actuator? I'm having trouble finding the it online at the local parts stores.

Always something for sure.
Glad to read that you didn't get in the path of that tornado. Just hope those people that were affected get back to normal and try to have a good Christmas.

Found it under that name.
It sounds like some people are able to clean up the screens and it takes care of it. Ever hear of this? It's $65 so it's not a real expensive part but figure it may be worth a try.

MG - Mobil 1 any version just doesn't sludge in anything I've know with a history of it. I would consider quitting use of the high mileage stuff - don't know what if anything is different except marketing? Been using M-1 since silver metal cans only grade was 5-20!

If your screens are plugged up, it would probably work by cleaning them, but I doubt yours would be reading how you use synth and change it. There is a spool valve inside that can hang and/or the return spring gets weak.

I personally haven't seen the phaser on one of those go bad, but honestly haven't really seen a lot of them roll through the shop with VVT codes. Every one that I've ran into and fixed ended up being the actuator solenoid.

DS....Ha....I didn't even notice your Grinch Cookie picture the other day....Nice
Tom.....I don't use the high mileage stuff. The Mobile 1 Extended is suppose to be their best oil and a step above the regular Mobile 1. It's suppose to have guaranteed protection up to 15K. I'm at less than half that now, and the way the oil looks after changing it, I just don't see it.
The screens were a bit dirty but not really sludged up. I might just go ahead and replace it.

I think this was the original silver can...........



Big cover up on what it could do. I was working at a Mobil Gas station and it claimed right on it 25,000 mile oil! Mobil bless their hearts paid for a lot of engines and shut up about it.

Virtually everything was carb aspirated with chokes all messed up so oil plain got contaminated no matter how good oil was so changing it was the only thing to know it was mostly the oil and not mixed with gas or anything else.

Punch spouts were fun - not!


Usually made quite a mess or better squish a whole can and waste a bag of kitty litterMad


I actually don't still have one of those mess makers,
