My 2002 Chyrsler Sebring Convertible has once again failed inspection. Intermittently the engine light will go on and the codes are 172 and 175 (Bank 1 and Bank 2 too rich). This has been going on for over a year.

The car is running fine with no problems. In the last year, we've replaced the PVC valve and an EVAP hose.

Any ideas on where to look first would be greatly appreciated.

how many miles has it been since your last tune-up? Weak spark due to worn parts won't burn cleanly, leaving too much unburned fuel in the exhaust. Eventually your cat will plug up tight and this will get real pricey real quick. With the age of this car, get the wires with the plugs. They most likely have been in there for a while.

V6-167 2.7L DOHC. Catalytic Converter still working.

The light has been going on and off intermittently for a year. Something new is now occuring; runs fine when it's cold (for about 5 to 10 minutes); Once the car is warm, it will act as if it may stall (it will buck a little) but if you let off the gas and coast, it will resume function just fine. This will happen for about 5 minutes or less, and then it'll be perfectly fine.

We will be working on this Saturday, so any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

jj; When the engine is cold, it requires a lot of fuel. Think back to the older cars, with carburetors. Those had a choke that would create a rich mixture (more fuel, less air) when they were cold. Fuel injected engines require input from various sensors for fuel delivery. No choke. There are many reasons that the engine could be running too rich. Have you had the trouble codes retrieved? You could have a CTS (coolant temp sensor) telling the computer that the engine is cold, even though it's warmed up. You could have a thermostat missing or stuck in the open position causing the engine to run too cool. Could have an injector leaking fuel, MAP/BARO sensor fault....ect. Running rich will kill a catalytic converter and cause premature engine wear. This is not something to let go for a year. Most large parts stores will retrieve the trouble codes for free. Have them retrieved and post them here. Don't buy any parts at this time. Let's see what the codes tell us. If this thing has been running rich, chances are that the oil has become contaminated with fuel. The PCV system will pick up those fuel vapors and just make things worse. Once we get to the bottom of this, you'll most likely need to get that oil changed. Backing up a bit, you did get P0172 and P0175. You may need to pay someone to record live data. Using the wife's candy thermometer, (don't let her see you doing it) measure the engine temp in the radiator once it is at normal operating temp. That will help. Put the thermometer back so that she doesn't know you used it.Wink
