2000 Mit Diamante codes 0173, 0170 & 0421 Sign In

This 2000 Mitsubishi Diamante with 137K miles won't pass inspection.

Code P0170 fuel trim malfunction Bank 1
Code P0173 fuel trim malfunction Bank 2
Code P0421 warm up catalyst below threshold Bank 1

What is this, and what repairs are required?

Thanks.

Your probably going to need a scan tool here. The codes are pretty generic and only indicate that the fuel is either too far rich or too far lean. It doesn't tell you which so you have to determine that with the scan data. You also have to look at all the sensor data for a cause like the temp sensors both intake and coolant, MAF and the MAP sensor.

The 421 is probably an early sign of a failing converter.

I hope this is not a duplicate. I was composing a reply and the space went blank except for a few words???

It was: Tell me about a scan tool. Who is most likely to have one?

And, what is bank 1 and bank 2 on a single exhaust vs a dual exhaust car; single catalytic converter vs two ?

A scan tool is a basic computer interface tool. Most shops have one. Bank one will be the side of the engine where #1 cylinder is.

Will this scan tool tell us exactly which sensor is bad and if the catalytic converter is bad or not?

How can the O2 sensors be tested?

Like HT mentioned, this one would require a scanner and you would have to be able to interpret the fuel trims that could cause them to go out of range..... Normally you'll get P0171 & P0174 or P0172 & P0175 codes, the 1st are lean bank codes & latter, rich bank codes, these ones don't even break that down for you. The banks refer to each side of the engine. A 4 cyl will only have bank 1.

So right now you don't know if you have lean codes or rich codes...... 1st step would be to look at the fuel trims and find out.....positive trims would be lean, negative trims, rich...... Lean codes could be be your air intake tube from the air cleaner off, hose off, split in it, it could have a vacuum leak, exhaust leak, all that stuff you could do a visual on. HT mentioned a few things that could set rich codes.....

With those codes, there is just too many things it could be, it needs to be narrowed way down..........But like I said, do a basic look over & look for something obviously broken, off, or hissing noise (vacuum leak)

Damn dude.....How many cars do you have..............lol Cool

I DO have an Actron CP 9180, and have scanned this vehicle. But what oh what does it all mean?

ST FTRM1 14% (Short term-fuel trim ratio bank1)

LT FTRM1 12.5% (long term-fuel trim. Air to fuel ratio bank 1)

ST FTRM2 11.7%

LT FTRM2 12.5%

O2S11 .14 Volts to .74 volts

O2S12 .06 V to .32 volts

and there are lots of other readings which mean just as much to me.

Translation, PLEASE?

As for all the cars...I am retired and one of my neighbors caught me working on my car one day, asked me if I could help him, and it's snowballed from there. I am the go-to-guy for friends and neighbors with "problem" cars. Sometimes it's fun and keeps me out of the street. I'm down to 2 personal cars, just having sold an 89 Olds, 92 Merc and a 91 Sedan DeVille.

Thanks and Happy and safe 4th

Your fuel trims aren't really out of the norm as the code would have us expecting. You might want to clear out all the codes and drive the car and watch what those fuel trim reading do. See if they start a trend going positive or negative and whether it sets the codes again. It may take more than one trip to set the codes.

You have a long term trim and a short term trim for both banks. Those readings are telling you just how much the computer has had to adapt to conditions in the engine so your watching for the computer having to work to overcome something either too rich or too lean, depending which direction those readings are moving. Right now yours are slightly positive on both banks but well within the range of adjustment and staying fairly even.

As HT said those don't look to bad at all, skewed slightly lean but not to bad but both banks are towards the lean side....

Before you clear the codes, do you have access to freeze frame data? If so post that up.

Get someone to drive for you and go for a spin. See what the trims do at high speed, see if they get closer to the zero or single digit range...

Yea working in the driveway can always be a hazard.......

Personally I always try to set something on fire every so often, beat stuff with a big hammer, cuss uncontrollably and every so often chase one of the grandkids around with a ratchet....
For some reason, neighbors requesting advise or repairs really isn't a problem for me......Tongue

My scan does have a freeze function. Tonight I'll try to run the tests suggested, freeze the data and post it.

Where and how does one adjust the trim functions with the computer actually doing the trimming? I'll have this car tonight for long enough to run it through some paces - highway and surface streets.

Thanks for the help so far.

Hope you guys had as good a 4th as I.

That's not what he was referring to. Most scan tools will freeze frame all the sensor data at the moment a code was set and store it for later use so the tech can see what was going on when the code set.

The owner has put this car and problem on the back burner. The car is parked until she gets some money.

When she gets the money, we are going to do more troubleshooting.

Thanks for the help so far.
