Today is the first day I took my van out since being repaired. Check engine light is back on, so I ran by Auto zone to see what the codes were. Its only one code now and its the 401 code.

Are you sure he cleaned those ports when he was in there?

Well I didn't watch him, but I was told they would be cleaned out. I can call and double check that.

That's a low flow code. If you have a DPFE sensor, that is likely the problem.

So far no codes. No check engine light. I do notice it is running a little rough when my foot is on the break, this is new. I would explain it as almost stalling.

I thank you so much for your help on this.

Try cleaning the throttle body.

Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle.

It wouldn't hurt to remove the IAC and clean and lubricate the slide valve in there.

Hi its me again.......
I drove my van one time before this post and one time after. I have been waiting on someone to help me with this suggestion. I finally got that chance yesterday. And we didn't do it. The person helping me with it said that the motor is shaking so bad I need to take it back to who fixed it because the motor mounts wont take that much shaking for to long. I have called them and made an appointment for tomorrow at 1pm. So I am thinking that its not almost stalling that it was shaking instead. Just wanted to update you on whats going on.

If it's shaking that bad, then you still have misfire problems that need to be found.

Check engine light is still off. No codes on the computer at Autozone.
Could a Misfire be the need for a tune up?
Tuneups as I learned years ago were plugs, wires, rotor, fuel filter, air filter, oil filter and oil change. I know today it seems that tuneup means different things.
My van did not shake before the work done on the motor, I hardly felt a bump in the road.

I have one more off topic question if that's OK....

I have power mirrors, passenger mirror works ok in all directions, driver side mirror will go up, down and left but not right. Do I suspect a mirror problem or a switch problem?

Keep one topic per question please.

Your misfire could be most anything. It needs to be diagnosed correctly to find the problem.

I think that if someone comes to read this post my last words would be if your van is running good, and your check engine light is on. Just leave it that way. I wish I had done that! I got my check engine light to be off but I also have been stranded for weeks! Even after changing the spark plugs and wires and the coil pack, its still not right. I would not drive this van on long trips anymore. Before I decided to get the check engine light off I trusted this van to go anywhere!

*********** This is just my uneducated opinion **************

That's some bad advice that we normally wouldn't allow anyone to post.
If you can't get the light to go out, it just means you need a more experienced tech.

The light is still out, the work they did on my motor has a mistake I think, they say it is plugs and wires because its only firing on 5 cylinders. It had no problem before they fixed it. It had a problem when I left the garage. Plugs and wires have been changed. I would think if its only firing on 5 cylinders it would have been doing that with the light on. Its been out less than 5 times sine its been fixed. I had no problem going anywhere before it was fixed.

The motor itself is jumping around <-- I took a video of it.

How can you say you didn't have a misfire before he fixed it? The title of your thread has PO301 right in it which is a misfire code.

If you're not happy with your shop, then find one that you are.

I wasn't trying to imply that the plugs and wires or the misfire was the mistake. In the beginning of this thread I mentioned it was in need of a tune up, to me a tune up includes plugs and wires if the wires are needed, mine had the factory numbers on them so yes they were needed. I am all ok with my plugs and wires :) The misfire problem went away with my new plugs and wires.
If it came across that way I'm sorry. The mistake I was referring to is what ever is making it shake.

I brought my van to a different mechanic yesterday. Really hoping that he would find something small to fix, to get this problem behind me. After about an hr he came and told me he doesn't know why its vibrating like that. He said aside from taking the engine apart, there is nothing that he can find wrong with my van. No codes , no misfire. His next plan would be to make sure nothing got dropped in the engine. He checked everything else. He pointed out to me that even the tires are vibrating. He said to me its like when you have a tire that has lost the wheel weight and your car vibrates from being off balance. Its going to be another several months before I can save up the money to have my engine taken apart again.

I brought my van to the Ford dealer yesterday and they were unable to find what the problem was in a quick search with my oil change. I made an appointment today for a $65 diagnostic. The result was that it is the Harmonic Balancer went bad. They told me it was dangerous to drive and kept it to fix tomorrow since they didn't have the part today. It should cost about $300 for the repair. I hope this is the real fix this time.

Old thread now - if that is the diagnosis that is about the right price and you can't do without that thingy being right!

I've seen bad balancers snap a crankshaft in two. Definately needs to be done asap.
