2000Buick Century Service light stays on Sign In

I have a 2000 Buick Century . The Service Eng. light won't go out .I took it to Auto Zone and they Did a Code Reading and said it was the gas cap.
The same thing happened a week prior to that.they said to tighten the cap. it ran about a week and came back on .So this time i put a new gas cap on . Auto Zone said they was not allowed to turn the light back out. So how do i get it to go out.

The people at Autozone are part time sales clerks with a cheap code reader. They are not trained technicians in any way. Just get the exact code number from them and post it here.

There is no EVAP trouble code number for a gas cap. The PCM doesn't monitor the gas cap. The PCM monitors how well the system is sealed when purge and vent valves are closed off by either putting the system under vacuum, using a leak pump to pressurize the system, or using atmospheric pressure to detect leaks (NVLD). If the trouble code pointed to a system leak of some kind, most people assume the gas cap is the fault. Sometimes it is if it isn't tightened correctly or has a bad seal. Other times it is something else in the system causing the leak code to appear. It takes special equipment to diagnose EVAP leaks and Autozone doesn't have that.
