More than likely the system thinks the ca nnister purge is working when it is not supposed to.

Thanks! Could this be caused by a vacum hose being misrouted? How much damage could occur if problem not fixed in a timely fashion? Hard to catch up with car when a teenager is involved lol.

Yes to all the above. There should not be any adverse effects to the vehicle. It will just vent gasoline vapors to the atmosphere instead of sucking them back into the engine.
