2002 VW Jetta, 155,000 miles.
battery was dead after leaving lights on. in the morning, I hooked the battery to jump the car off, tried to turn the ignition, car wouldn't even make a cranking sound.

now when leave the battery connected, the headlights stay on, the EPC light is on, and the keyfob light is on without the key in the ignition. I try putting the key in and turning it and it does nothing.
I did find some moisture in the driver's side fuse panel and some the fuse contacts had some sort of white-ish corrosion while I was trying to diagnose the problem. cleaned it up and changed all the fuses to be safe.

The first lesson you have to learn is that you don't "jump" totally dead batteries. The alternators in today's cars are designed to maintain a battery, not completely recharge a dead one. If an alternator is made to operate at full capacity for any period of time, it will burn out.

Also, often when a battery is run that low it suffers permanent damage. Your first step is to manually charge the battery with an external charger at a low rate. When finished, have the battery tested for it's health. If it fails, replace it.

After that you can deal with any electrical issues in the car if there still are any.

hey thanks for the quick response. It never got to the point where it would turn over. switching the key in any possition does absolutely nothing. I already attached the battery to charger/air compressor we had overnight. I used my multimeter to measure the voltage to be sure it was close if not over 12V... as soon as I attach the cables the headlights are on, the aforementioned dash lights are on, etc.

It's been about a month since it happened. I just got busy and put it aside until I had time to devote (hardly ever happens). I've been using my son's and wife's vehicles to get to and fro. Of course this gets old and I would much rather have my own car back.

I'll charge it again and have it tested. I'm fine when it comes to the mechanical problems. its the electrical stuff I hate Unsure

Sounds like you'll end up needing a new battery.
