radiator is looking dry

hi, my car over heats after running about half a mile. i checked my radiator by opening the cap (after engine cooled down) and saw that below the cap ( inside the radiator ) there are some grooves but there is no fluid. is this normal or should there be coolent below the radiator cap. the reservoir is filled with water and cooling fan does not start upon starting the car. should the fan start running as soon as the car is started? Will it not over heat once i add some coolent to the radiator and the reservoir (after emptying the water).

Cooling systems with recovery tanks (almost all now) should be full to the top at the radiator - then at the recovery bottle. The fack that you are low means you need to know where it went. Fans for the engine don't generally come on until needed - not just at start up. Use of anti-freeze (properly mixed) is actually LESS effective for cooling than just water but not the way to go unless just testing where you can't freeze. Anti-freeze is important to prevent corrosion and of course from freezing.
First job here is find where coolant is leaking, then fix it, Good luck,
