post locked   problem after removing battery and reinstalling

I removed my 2007 Milan car's battery yesterday and reinstalled it about an hour later. This morning I can get it started but it won't accelerate. The lights and other electrical equipment appear to be working fine.

It is difficult to start but not impossible. The engine cranks several times before it starts. Once started it idles ok, but when I press the gas it revs up only slightly and then the engine dies.

I only removed the battery so that I could hook this good battery up (via jumper cables) to another car that I needed to read the odometer on. I authored a post related to that on Saturday past. I've checked the connections to the posts and they appear solid and the fact the car starts leads me to think the connections aren't the problem.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I think you "pithed" (rendered brain dead) it's adaptive memory or triggered some type of theft control not familiar to me. Did anything go wrong with taking it out or putting it back in? Neg off first back on last -- no sparks touching grounds with pos cable still intact with neg still on or stuff like that?

When removing a cable for any reason you should always use a memory saver, any lights (hood light) etc., disconnected or disabled. Don't open a door or run anything till all hooked up again with a real battery.

Cheap stuff has worked but better stuff available and the newer the better stuff would be a must.

Cheap stuff =

Those just push in a power port/cig lighter that is enabled all the time.

Here's a better type =

It's not just to save clock and radio settings anymore,

Tom, Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I took the battery out of the Milan by removing the red/positive first. When I re-attached it I put black/negative on last. I'll do better next time. Unsure

I did notice a slight spark when I re-attached it when putting the clamp on the black post. The spark occurred between the post and the clamp only. I was careful not to touch any metal parts with the wrench or my body while doing so.

Assuming I did pith the poor thing, how can I reanimate it? I know that didn't work with the frog in high school anatomy, and I'm hoping my Milan doesn't suffer a permanent problem.

Thanks

I assume you must have a check engine light on. You need to post the code numbers. It sounds like it may have set a throttle actuator code.

You are right pharmy - that was high school anatomy and the frogs! Rare word, surprised you recalled it.

OK - Get codes as "HT" said. He's going to know more how to get out of this than I will. First note is always neg off first back on last even if that messes things up your tools don't touch ground by mistake and cause problems with any car.

Stuff like this on assorted OBD1 and some OBD2 set ups really want the memory saved. Best not to be the nice guy and jump some dead vehicle either, use a spare battery or the booster packs are handy and gel cell inside so no problems if they tip over and most have a power port. Good ones aren't free though but it solves these problems and protects YOUR car if jumping a wildly failed car you can catch troubles! Think about how much you personally need one vs a good motor club and let them do this as they do all the time.

Side note but pertinent: When a car is totally dead best to charge it with a charger not just the alternator. Feel how hot they get trying. It can kill a good alternator to add to the fun. That part is not new. Good luck. See what the code gods have to say,

OBDII codes are:
P2104 Throttle Actuator Control System - Forced Idle

P2107 Throttle Actuator Control Module Processor

P2112 Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Closed

I searched online and wonder if I should just clear these and see if it works, or is there more to it? I hope I didn't do some major damage to the Throttle actuator system.

Thanks again

First remove the intake snorkel and push on the throttle plate with your finger and make sure nothing is jamming is and then try clearing the codes.

I didn't find anything in the throttle. Cleared the codes, and fired her up. No problems! I even had one of those OBD code readers I got off amazon a couple of months ago for a different problem. Never used it for that so I'm glad I finally got to use it.

Thanks for all the help.
