All body metal should be "ground." Battery negative to engine block, block to body thru the vehicle as engineered. Motors can and will use both power and ground wires to them being in item the moves, plastics and so on.
IMO - it's fine to add ground straps when called for well thought out, out of harm's way.
How did you decide ground was the problem and what is the problem other than fan can work? It may be sent ground to the fan to enable it via temp sensor, BCM or forced on with A/C request on some,

What are you trying to fix here? Do you have a stored code or something? What is the code number?

Re: open ground wire on radiator fan Sign In

Tom,
Thanks for the reply. I have two separate radiator fans and checked the voltage to the sensor and it tests ok also the three relays in the fuse box test ok as well as the fuse itself. As you know when the engine reaches a certain temp the two fans come on to cool the engine. that's whats not happening and the only thing left is a missing ground . so I have no problem adding one to the line. It's a common ground used by both fans and who knows what else !.
I think I'm also going to tone the lead and see if I can find the open first. Can't work on this till Sat so I'll have to put on hold for now. Thanks for your input.
Joey

You'd do a lot better if you told somebody what is going on and what you are trying to do. This circuit is 2 speed and uses 3 different relays to move the ground around to change the speeds

These are 5 pin relays that do one thing at rest and something different when energized.

Re: open ground wire on radiator fan Sign In

I personally will not find specifics on what triggers them to run if that's the issue. It can be that they have power all the time and ground added as requires is what I'm saying. Computer if you will decides.
If with A/C (most) would either run all the time for at least one or maybe even two speeds. Might require sensing needs by A/C pressures for one in combination with engine temp and sensors.
Bit lost for you. What isn't working that you think should be when all plugging in, warmed up, testing A/C etc isn't working so we have a chance to suggest what it most likely,

Hammer is trying to get you on track you NEED to scan and post ALL codes and describe all issues, then the troubleshooting can begin.
