noise like weedeater running off in distance coming from back of car

I have a 99 ford Crown Victoria LX 281 ci approx. 160,000 mi one day driving down road a noise started sounded like a weed eater running way off in distance it stopped after a while. got where I was going about an hour later went home every thing ok then just as I pulled into the drive way it started again I got out to see if I could locate the noise the only thing back where it was coming from is the fuel tank it has a elec fuel pump in tank so I'm thinking it must be it. any way got home let car set for a week or so then started driving it again no more noise the after couple hundred miles coming home one day it jerked several times drove another mile or so then it did it again. got home turned it off, that was a couple of days ago, started it up drove it around to front of house today ran fine. anyone have any Ideas?

So far it does seem like a fuel pump. With it being intermittent is going to be a hassle to be sure. You said it jerked for a while so it's probably related and a failing fuel pump is getting higher on the list.
What to do? Any way you can force this to happen and or if it lasted for a while you could use a listening rod/device at the gas tank or maybe even hear it using a funnel in filler neck comparing no noise to when it happens. ALL CAUTION IF YOU TRY THAT OF COURSE!
If you hadn't said it made the car jerk my guess would be about anything that could move. Even exhaust parts can make strange sounds but pretty much would be so intermittent or make it jerk if that was a power from engine "jerk" not some suspension or other something,
