no spark no power to fuel pump Sign In

got a toughie for yall! I have an 86 ford ranger 2.3L . has no spark and no powr to the fuel pump. I have narrowed it down to the EEC relay. I have purchased 2 new relays, neither of which worked. I know that I have power and ground at the relay connector. I have removed the relay and put a jumper wire in. now I have spark and fuel pump power. my question is, is there something that can be destroying my relays as soon as I install them? I haFrownve the Batt unhooked, and then hook it back up when the new relay is installed. or could I just have gotten 2 bad relays in a row from NAPA?

Re: no spark no power to fuel pump Sign In

Unlikely something is destroying your relays. Relays need four things to function properly. It needs two power sources, one feed circuit to the load(s), and a ground.

Does the relay click when you turn the ignition on?

Check voltages at these wires in the relay cavity.

Red/light green: Hot (12 volts) when ignition is in the on or start position
Yellow: Hot all the time
Black/light green: Ground. Should have 0 ohms or less than or equal to 0.3 volts (voltage drop)
Dark blue: feed for the loads on the EEC circuit. You confirmed that is good by your jumper test.

Re: no spark no power to fuel pump Sign In

relay doesnt click and fuel pump doesn;t run. I used the test procedure on link deleted ..... not allowed for a ford EEC relay . results indicated that the relay was bad so i got a new one from napa and it didn;t work, then another and it doesn't work either. don;t kno what im doing wrong.

What was the test procedure?

test 1.checks for power at low current circuit. we passed this test.
test 2.checks for power athe high current circuit. we also passed this test.
test 3.testing the EEC power relay voltage output. this test we failed.
test 4. checking the ground circuit. we passed this test.

Re: no spark no power to fuel pump Sign In

Did you make these checks with a volt meter or test lamp? Did you make these checks with the relay plugged in and with the ignition turned on?

What were your readings?

Re: no spark no power to fuel pump Sign In

test 1=;key on
test 2=key off
test 3=key on
1 and 2 had 10-12 volts and 3 had nothing all had the relay in except #4 ground test.

Re: no spark no power to fuel pump Sign In

What about test 4?

I wouldn't worry too much about tests 2 and 3 because the relay doesn't even click when you turn the ignition on.

You need to test the ground in step 4.

Take your volt meter and probe the back of the relay connector with the meter's black lead connected to the negative battery terminal. Don't shove the probe in there and damage the female terminals. Make sure the relay is plugged into the connector and the ignition is on.

Post the readings you get:

I get 10 V on both tests

Re: no spark no power to fuel pump Sign In

If you get 10 volts on the black light green wire with the ignition turned on, the ground is bad or open.

What is the voltage at your battery terminals? 10 volts is a dead battery.

Re: no spark no power to fuel pump Sign In

Check the ground location on the side of the engine block right above the starter where the negative battery cable connects. The ground for the EEC relay is there also. Make sure that ground is clean and tight. Remove the grounds from the block and use sand paper to make sure they are clean and have a good connection to the engine block.

I am an idiot. forgot to turn ignition on. in your picture, the top meter reading is 10v and the bottom one, black green wire, is 0

Re: no spark no power to fuel pump Sign In

Did you inspect the relay connector? Made sure the female terminals are not corroded or damaged. Made sure that you have good terminal tension, so the female terminals make good contact with the relay blades? Also made sure your female terminals aren't backing out of the relay connector when the relay is plugged in. Tug on the wires and make sure the terminals don't pull out.

everything appears clean and tight. there is a vaseline like jell on the connectors, i asssumed that was normal, it too is clean looking.

Re: no spark no power to fuel pump Sign In

If your readings are correct and you have good contact in your connector, you have everything to cause that relay to energize.

Who makes the relay you bought and what is the part number?

Have you bench tested the relay to see if it energizes?

Re: no spark no power to fuel pump Sign In

I relied on the napa guy to give me the correct one, I don't kno the part # but it is supposed to be the "Better" one. I will have to bench test tomorro. To test that, do i put a wire from each small connector to the b att? one pos and one neg of course, and then chck for continuity on the 2 large connectors?

Re: no spark no power to fuel pump Sign In

Yes. When you touch the two small terminals to battery positive and negative, the relay should click (energize). Then, as you stated, should have continuity between the two larger terminals.

If you battery is only showing 10 volts, you should put it on a charger also.

Re: no spark no power to fuel pump Sign In

Just 2 cents: Take a good look at the plug from vehicle's harness to relay. Greased to relay as DS mentioned but back side can be a problem and mess up testing anything or be intermittent. Fix if trouble found or get a pigtail end if trashed no doubt used at the age. If so only take what has exact # and wire colors to splice in properly,

Re: no spark no power to fuel pump Sign In

To add to what tom is saying, this relay carries a lot of current and they have had a problem with the plug getting hot leading too the contacts overheating and weakening, causing poor contact with the relay. Usually if you grab the relay and harness and manipulate it with the key on, you will feel the relay turn off and on.

Re: no spark no power to fuel pump Sign In

Exactly HT. Was just one all erratic - relays know good on hand just didn't snug in right. Pulling on vehicle's harness showed looseness. Tried to tighten and lube but not thrilled so tossed that one for a pig-tail from junkyard. Just that one - many others were fine.

Note: The NAPA "Echlin" replacements relay will fit others. OE ones will not in this vintage, color coded skirting with a lump index to not mix them all up, Tom

Re: no spark no power to fuel pump Sign In

Hi all, just wanted you all to know, I wire a new pigtail and new style relay in place of the old pcm relay that was in the truck. It is running perfect now! I was unable to get an old style 4 pin relay that worked. Napa ordered me 4 of them and we tested them in the store, they were all bad. Another auto store ordered me one and it too didn't work. I bought a new pigtail and relay kit and wired it to match and she runs great. Thank you all for your help. By the way, that relay from ford was discontinued and it was all aftermarket relays that were bad. A dealer in Kansas had one in stock and they wanted, hold your breath!, $91 bucks just for the relay, of course shipping would be more! went to motion auto, got the kit, and 11 bucks later I was back on the road. anyway, thanks again!,, MikeSly
