need advice on adding extra backup lights Sign In

I have an old 1980 F100 pickup that I am wanting to add a couple small halogen lights onto the rear end to give me a good amount of light for backing up in dark places. I have a cheap set of aftermarket halogen lights that someone gave me, probably 3 inches in diameter. I think they are actually fog lights. I have a toggle switch I was going to mount to the dashboard. I'm guessing an in-line fuse would probably be a good idea, but don't know what amperage of one I should use. The toggle switch is rated for up to 35 amps. If someone could advise me on how I should wire this up and what size of fuse I should use, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for your time

This should be easy to do. If you have the wiring attached to the lights, all you will need is an in-line fuse with the same gauge wire. You can get this at any auto parts store. The wire gauge is stamped on the wire casing. I would use an in line fuse with the same rating as your headlamps. You can easly check this by looking in the fuse box. Find the fuse for your headlamps. It should be 15 or 20 amps. Make sure you have enough wire to go to the back of your truck. These are usually mounted on the front so I am gussing you will need to buy more. This can also be purchased in rolls at the auto parts store. The hook up is simple. You will need to run the positive wire from the switch and attach it to your positive battery cable. The negative can be attached to the frame of the vehicle. The switch sould show on the connectors the +/- terminals.
