gm truck gets hot & windows/locks quit Sign In

1993 GMC Silverado - when it sits for a while in the heat, the power windows and locks quit working. It used to start again after I ran the a/c for a while. But now my R12 a/c is out and I need the windows to work until I can get the a/c fixed.
Any suggestions?

Arggh! I bet there is a relay at fault with the windows and locks. I'm just guessing but I bet I'm right. For the A/C hit that spot if you want to convert which I suggest and we can help you with that. That may be costly depending on the problems. T

How do I fix the relay problem? Or find out if that is it?

Damn! I'm trying to recall the whole thread. If you don't have one get a simple 12V test light and check all the fuses. I don't know what you have for tools but you can buy one of those at any dept store and less than $5 buck at Wally World. It's cheap but handy. You can check all your fuses with the ignition on and it should light up the handle of the tester on the type fuses you have with the scratch awl type tester each fuse will light up on BOTH sides. If you don't have the headlights on some will be dead on both sides. If not sure do this with the lights on outdoors pleaseSmile, with engine running.

I don't have access to where your relay is but it's likely to be under the hood. They are hard to diagnose and sometimes respond to a meduim/light whack from the plastic end of a screwdriver. If you have a relay box that I think you do they may be labeled or as said the owner's manual will give you the position and what relay covers what items.

Best way to diagnose an intermittent relay problem is just put a new one in. If the exact same part # try the A/C relay. Don't mess with the others. Best to just get a new one (they aren't that expensive) and if it is NOT the problem post back and I'll try to think what next.

We'll get thru this and then lets fix your a/c if you are up to it yourself. Let me/us know what tools and any info as to your abilities. If you want it to work again go buy about 4 12 oz. cans of 134a now before they make it illegal to buy or the kit and the 134a before as it will have the fittings. We call them death kits but I could walk you thru that. Don't buy stuff with sealers and post back as said as to what the problem was to begin with. A/C can get real expensive. Good luck, T

Tools are not a problem. I have most hand tools, compressor & acc, but not many auto specialty tools. Money is the problem. Tuition runs me $11k/year so I do everything I can myself. I have the Chilton's for extra reference - it'a @ the house. Experience goes as far as a shade tree mech, but I am pretty inclined. I'll do the relay testing this weekend. Right now I'm studying for a biochem test tomorrow morning.
On the a/c - I can get help with the labor if you can give me some guidelines on how to do the conversion to the 134a. I think the guy told me my compressor is out when I had it checked. The clutch doesn't even kick in anymore. Blower is fine. And it worked up until about a month ago.

Oh boy do I know what college costs! I'm single but have two nephews who nicely pick colleges that will cost my my brother et al about 100K a year!!!!!!!!! It was planned for but the price went out of control! I'm a real family guy and if needed I'll pay to see those kids thru college.

Back to troubles here. The clutch not kicking in is almost certainly low pressure in the system. R-12 is restricted and yes you have a leak but it may be so slow that just a boost would get that going again. You really need gauges to know what you are doing or you could screw it all up.

Let me know about the windows and when you feel ready email me directly (just click on my name) and say you are from this site and I can get you thru conversion to 134a for short bucks. If you have some R-12 keep it that way if possible. Don't even consider adding any unless you have both high and low pressures. Trust me!

I'm at a site that cooperates with this one for just A/C which is at:

Http//:TomGreenleaf.AutoACsystems.com --click on Cool Zone for the forum. It's got some sharp knives in the drawer! For A/C only. I send others here from there.

I'll be here as long as they'll have me. Heck getting paid 100K a year is worth it ----- laugh!! No pay. I do this for the love of it and sites struggle for bucks. Sponsors and the # of members must rule. Tell your friends to sign up.

Let's get your windows and locks working if we can with a keyboard. T
