brake light problems

Hey guys, I am having a problem with my electrical system on my 1996 ford contour. When I turn my headlights on, the rear lights do not turn on. The hazard lights work fine, the turn signal lights work fine but the rear do not turn on when I switch on my headlights. Also when I depress the brake pedal the rear lights do not illuminate, but top rear light on top of the rear dash does turn on. I changed out the brake pedal switch, but that did not work. Can anyone give me anymore suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

With the turn signal and hazards working we know that the bulbs for the bake lights are good (same bulb as for turn/hazard) and the wiring from the turn/hazard switch are ok. The brake pedal switch has to be ok or the high mount light wouldn’t be working.
I think what you’re going to have to do is open up the steering column, so that you can test the multifunction switch.
The lower brake lights do not get their power directly from the brake light switch the way the high mount does. There is a slice in the wiring that one lead goes directly to the high mount and another lead goes to the turn/hazard switch and then from that switch to the lower lights.
Once the column is opened up you’ll need a test light connected to a good ground, that’s to test for power at the back of the multifunction switch.
With everything turned off and the brake pedal applied you should have power at the orange/black wire which is power in from the peddle switch, blue/white wire is power out to the left rear and a blue/black wire is the power out to the right rear. These colors of wires should be right, that’s as long as my wiring diagram is right.
There are quite a few wires there so take your time and if you’ve found the proper ones they should light the test light when the brakes are applied, if you only have power at the orange/black the mulifunction switch or the connector has gone bad.
As for the parking/tail lights start at the back of the car and test whether there is power at the sockets with the headlight switch turned on. Again if my diagram is the correct one the wire color should be orange for the right side and orange/white for the left. If there’s power try changing the bulbs, if not check the two 7.5 amp fuses in the interior fuse panel, left and right side are fused separately.
