battery will not charge - new one or something else? Sign In

the first time my battery went flat I jumped it and used it for 90 mins that day in 2 journeys, the next day the battery was still charged enough for use the next day.
the same happened the following weekend (don't use car during the week)
this weekend, the battery was flat again so I jump started it however after a 35 min journey the battery did not charge at all and it would not start immediately after the journey.
I tried to charge the battery with a cheap kit in the house, I set it on high charge for 15 hours but the car would not start after this
I was told the battery is one year old however it looks like a cheap battery and it's a maintenance free battery

so do I need a new battery or may there be a different problem like the alternator?
it's an old Nissan micra, I would appreciate a link where I could shop online (I am in UK) if anyone can advise

thanks all!

Sounds like that battery needs to be in the battery graveyard but first..before you send it off there are a number of little things you can check or do. First off your battery connections..are they tight, clean and ready to transfer the juice both ways.? Altenator or generator connections as well.? Next up check your existing battery for the proper fluid level. In my neck of the woods our summers are horribly hot and humid here and even in winter if theres not enough fluid in each cell of your battery it won't hold a charge even if its fairly new. Check your grounding strap if the battery has one, it might have come loose or may be dirty or corroded and that of course won't help out at all. Voltage regulator/charging system on your vehicle could also be the problem but I suspect its the fluid level in your battery that has never been maintained through the battery's lifetime. IF its a "maintenance free" battery where you cannot take the caps off to add fluid then I'd check to see if the battery is still in warranty and if not probably time for a new one, but if you have some extreme weather I'd buy one that has the capability to take the caps off and check the battery's fluid level every few months or sooner.

Kepp in mind that automotive batteries ARE heavy items meaning IF you buy one and it needs to be shipped the ground shipping charges will be expensive and may be more costly to ship it verses the actual price of a new battery if bought in person. I don't think automotive batteries are allowed to be shipped by air as they are corrosive/hazardous items and could leak in flight.

I'll step back and let more experienced folks help you out here. GOOD LUCK..!

Don't even consider having a battery shipped. It's considered hazardous cargo if it's already filled with acid and they would want your old one back.

Just drive into your local AutoZone or Advanced Auto and they will test your old one for free and install a new one if needed.
