Windstar 1998 - turn signal problem - help Sign In

I have a 1998 Ford Windstar 3.8L

Experiencing turn signal problems:
1. started off having left side not working, then it would come back. No audible blinking sound or visual flashing light indication on the
dashboard.
2. normally the right side was okay but occasionally it would also fail (not blink), although usually the left it was never both at the same time.
3. checked all fuses and bulbs - all good. Replaced flasher with new one and system appeared to be back online.
4. started to hear buzzing sound when trying to go left - no left signal but right works.
5. finally - both sides failed outright !

> do I have a possible multifunction switch problem now ???

looking for your advice on what to do next. New switch is +$100, would like to verify if I need that before buying (most shops won't accept returns on electrical parts)

p.s. hazard lights only flash on the right side now ??!!

It’s going to be a relatively easy check for this because the right turn is working. Left and right are fed by the same source so we know it’s not a feed problem from the flasher unit to the switch.
You’ll have to remove the steering column covers to get to the harness connector of the switch. Once there take a test light to the Lt. Green/white wire. With the ignition on and the left turn on, the test light should light; it may even flash if the test light puts enough draw on the circuit. If the test light doesn’t light, change the switch. The Lt. Green/white wire is the feed wire from the switch to the left lights.

turns out both (left & right) turn signal indicators have failed from time to time. Sometimes they'll work, other times they do not. Intermittent problem it appears. The headlights and wipers work great.

My question is: is it worthwhile trying to repair/clean the multifunction switch ? Or should it just be replaced outright ?
