Voltage surge Sign In

Hi, I'm new to the forum & am having a problem with my old Olds. Any help is much appreciated! Put a voltmeter on the '69 Cutlass 350 today & had something strange happen. It was doing this before I hooked up the voltmeter, but this confirmed the problem. When the car is idling it will sit at 12 volts for maybe 30 seconds. Then it surges up to about 15.5 volts & any lights that are on get significantly brighter. It stays there a while & then will drop back. It goes back & forth with no apparent rhyme or reason. Also, when the car ignition is off, the volt meter jumps between 10.5 & 12.2 volts. Any ideas?

The way it is acting you have a bad voltage regulator. I believe it is separate from the alternator on that year.

The volt meter in the instrument cluster or your multimeter? With the ignition turn off, you shouldn't have any gauges working.

Re: Voltage surge Sign In

I misspoke, I meant with the ignition switch on but the car not running. Since then I looked again & the wiper motor was hot. I unplugged all of the wiring to it & the washer motor. Now the car holds 12 volts when the ignition on & car not running. It still overcharges while running. When I rev the engine the volts go up with it. When fully charged it's showing over 14 volts idling. When I rev it it goes to about 16 volts. Thanks for the reply!

Re: Voltage surge Sign In

As HT pointed out, you probably have a voltage regulator problem.
