93 Chevy C1500 truck. My Turn signal won't cancel, the canceling cam don't seem to be hitting the lobes I can't see why. it look ok there no wear on it. I had the steering wheel off and on a few times , the only other thing is there nothing holding the shaft it self you can pull the shaft a good 3" this is the shaft that the steering wheel bolt on to.

Re: Turn signal won't cancel Sign In

Just curious: Is this to say the whole wheel and shaft can pull up and go down THREE inches with the nut on? Ah - there's something big time wrong with that steering column if so. Is just the turn signal and hazzard mechanism holding this in or down?

The only thing keeping the shaft from coming out is the shaft from the steering box that it. I can find no place for a clip or anything tp go to lock it in place. The Shaft from the steering box is made to move

Re: Turn signal won't cancel Sign In

Hope others are watching who know more exact details of how it could move like that.

Below is a basic/generic pic of a GM steering column. There's a rubber vibration damper (looks like chunk of tire sometimes) inline on shaft and U-joint(s) as needed. The column should just have a couple bolts that holds the whole housing in place underdash - like with U bolts.

Since the 60s almost all columns have had a funky mesh like part made to squish if your bod slams into it as in an accident. I've simply never had to fix one as those vehicles were done!

Ok: GM did make a "tele" column for ions that would extend forward and back with a lever to lock it where you liked. Didn't think they put them in trucks but may have. I guess that feature could fail.

I'm either not understanding something about your complaint or it's all something that never happened with anything to me. This really doesn't sound safe to drive without more investigating. Look for where it can slip in splines and what retains the housing along the way for fasteners intact.

Possibly that rubber vibration thing could allow motion if torn but not 3" and would soon snap completely if so I would think. It needs a real serious check for what is doing this!

This shaft was replacement do to replacing the old 5 spd trans with a Auto the old shaft was the same way . part 1 on the pic is the only things holding it in and that shaft is made to move. I could put a camp on it but what belong on there ? can you tell me about the cam for turn signal why won't it hit the lobe on the SW?

Re: Turn signal won't cancel Sign In

There's no point in the turn signal issue with the shaft moving as it does right now. That splined slip needs to be there for normal body to frame deviations but not to move there at will by pulling on wheel.

Who swapped the colums for standard and automatic trans? Where did the new(used) column come from? If this is just in there now it might have be wrecked!

The "squish" thing on a collapsable steering column was meant as a ONE TIME thing and then you would discard the whole column,

Re: Turn signal won't cancel Sign In

The shaft from the steering box can move free it bolt to the shaft from the steering column other then that there if nothing holding it all work was done by me the parts came from a junk yard

Click here. Look this site over. It has a lot of information. It shows step by step how to replace the t/s switch. Make sure all the parts shown are in your column.

here a better pic of the shaft, there nothing to hold it in place. I could put camp on it but would that harm anything ?
