TEMP GAGE Sign In

i have an 89 firebird i just bought it.. the temp gage was working and no its not i replaced the coolent temp sencer.. is that the right one to get the gage to work?
well i put the new one in and the gage still dont work

Are you sure you replaced the sender for the gauge? If so the next most likely problem is in the dash which can be a total PIA.

Trick: If you have an odometer reset that is close and goes thru the plastic glass see if you can SO carefully get a piece of mechanic's wire thru and just touch the needle of the gauge. It may just have stuck. I'm a cheap cactus and drive older cars and sometimes this crazyness works!! T Smile

Back in 89 they still used two sensors, actually one is a sensor for the PCM and the other is a sending unit for the gauge.
In the diagram I’ve marked the coolant sensor with a blue dot and the temperature-sending unit with a read dot.
The sending unit may have one or two wires depending on whether you have a check gauges light along with the gauge. Regardless of how many wires the one you want to deal with is the dark green wire.
To test the sender, unplug the green wire and ground it to the engine block or battery negative with a jumper wire.
Then turn the ignition to the run position the gauge should go to the full hot position, if it does replace the sending unit.
If not you will need to check for an open in the green wire from the sending unit to the instrument cluster unit (gauge).
If the green wire is ok and there is power to the dash unit replace the dash unit.
I’m not sure when they started making the instrument clusters an integrated unit, so I’m not sure if this will apply to yours. Meaning that if something goes wrong with any one gauge or portion of the cluster the whole cluster will need to be replaced or rebuilt.
You could call the dealer and ask the parts department if the individual gauges are sold, have your VIN number when you call them.
