Starter removal problems Sign In

I have 1997 GMC Sierra 2500 turbo diesel. I need to replace the starter. However there are 2 transmission coolant lines directly under the starter. And to make it worse an exhaust pipe directly under the coolant lines so even if I somehow disconnected the coolant lines they would not be able to swing far enough out of the way. How do I get this stupid starter out?

According to the factory instructions, that stuff shouldn't be a problem or have to be removed.

Remove or Disconnect
  1. Negative battery cable. Refer to CAUTION
  2. Starter brackets and/or shields, if equipped.
  3. Wires from the starter solenoid..
    • Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands.
  1. Two bolts and washers (where present) holding the starter to the engine.
  2. Starter from the engine.

Yeah, and every video online shows the coolant lines of to the side more. But there is not enough room

I can get the bolts out easy, just can't slip the starter past the lines

Just a comment for trans lines: If you do cut or have to bend them, do it exactly right and back in place. Many will use clips such that they don't rub each other etc. It matter a lot. If they can whip around or rub they will wear a hole at great risk to transmissions for not paying attention,
