Relocating ignition key. What color wires are for starter. Sign In

1991 Jeep Wrangler X 2.4 with 5 speed, 151,000 miles.

To save money I'm moving the ignition switch to the dash. The one on the tilt steering column locked up and I forced it with pliers to get me home.
I need to know which wires to relocate to the new ignition switch. I have pulled the steering wheel off and removed the turn signal cam assembly with
all the wires still attached.

1991 - It would be better to fix the lock-set that broke with new and have it as intended IMO,

Besides the ignition switch is down on the column tube under the dash. Not where you put the key.

If it is under the dash can someone please tell me or show a picture of it so I can connect the 3 or 4 wires to a new switch and put my jeep back together.

No, that's not something that it would be safe to advise you on. Fix it right

No means no. Last thing you need is it catching on fire by jerry rigging it.

Is that all that's really broken? Checked it was $52.99 - a bit more than I thought but even rigging it is going to cost most of that. Do it right,

Plus there are a hell of a lot more than 4 wires to deal with. Fixing it right actually is the cheaper repair for this.

Hopefully he is reading this. You know how stubborn some people can be.

I have seen a vehicle that burnt to the ground because the owner was too cheap to fix an ignition switch problem and bypassed it. Thank goodness it wasn't parked in his garage when it went up like a birthday candle. Kind of funny seeing someone scrape what was left of their car off a driveway with a shovel and trashcan. From that day I was humbled by what I saw and always use the correct techniques and repair electrical problems or any problems to they way they were intended to be.

You might think, "Awww, this can't happen to me...you don't know what your talking about. I have done it many times and never had any problems." All it takes is that one time and you'll be a believer. Learn from other people's mistakes.

Yea hopefully.......The problem here is while pulling the steering wheel isn't a big deal, if you've never done one before and don't have the few special tools needed, then it can seem like an impossible task where just "cutting" some wires seems easier....

Seen a lot of them come in with push buttons & toggle switches.......

This one's kinda got the feel that he is gonna wire it up.......one way or another....
