Radio display turns off with adjustable steering wheel

I just purchased a 2002 PT Cruiser. The previous owner took excelent care of it. He pointed out one issue he has had with the car since he purchased it (used).
The light display of the radio turns off (but not the radio). If you unloose the adjustable steering wheel and lower and raise it all the way up the display turns back on.
The display will turn off while driving after getting the display turned on.
He said he took it to a dealership some time ago and the dealership said it was a common problem in many Cruisers with adjustable steering and they had NO IDEA what caused it or how to fix it.
I'm all ears, any and all suggestions welcome. This isn't a big deal but I foresee it being annoying at some point in the future (I live off my radio)

And why do you think the engine size and mileage aren't applicable? We ask for that for good reasons so don't assume that we don't need it..
