Hi

I am so stressed about this situation and need it resolved, I will try and keep this short as possible

Several months ago Engine light came on reading faulty maf sensor so bought a brand new sensor and put that on.
A few days later engine light back on which read a fault in the maf wiring loom, checked wires and ends were torn so my mechanic friend , Brian, cut ends off.
Car still ran rough with diagnostics and engine light reading maf wiring fault, so Brian said the colors of the wiring looked to be wrong color and in wrong sequence, so as he had some wiring in his garage he decided to have a play changing colors over trying to get it right but just guessing as we could not find color sequence anywhere. he has put connectors on temporarily where he cut the wires to attatch the donor wire to.

Then he decided to take the 6 prong maf sensor off my car and put a 4 prong maf sensor on, he connected 4 of the 6 wires from the maf wiring harness to the replacement 4 prong sensor and put 2 of the wires ( 1 at each end) into a loop saying these 2 were just open loop and not needed, he later cut off the 2 wires, 1 at each end, he said they served no purpose anyway as they are only open loop.

The problem with the maf wiring still persists, not as bad as previously as car not stalling any more but does refuse to accelerate if revved to hard , also if car has been off overnight for example and you press accelerator it tries to stall first time so you take foot off and press gas again and it revs fine.
these symptoms only occurred right after he cut the wires so they are definitely related to the maf wiring being cut.

It has probably been around 6 months now that I have been having these problems with the maf wiring , I did have it booked in with an auto electrician several months back but didn't end up going because my friend told me he knew how to fix it but he didn't and so I feel to awkward to go back to that garage where it was booked in at and I am stuck in same situation.

Anyway he is saying we should put the original 6 prong maf sensor back on and see if that sorts it ( even though only has 4 wires now as he has cut 2 end wires off, 1 at each end , he says that won't matter because they were open loop and not needed anyway)

Any ideas on this situation ?

please help, I am so stressed about it,

Many thanks

Whatever vehicle this is codes don't tell you what to replace just the circuit with an issue.
So, you found messed up wiring. IDK as you didn't say what this is but perhaps get exact whole plug and exact color wires from a get your own parts junkyard and properly solder and splice it in.
Now seems you have it AFUed with wrong stuff so hope you have the OE stuff to get it back right and still may find it caused other issues but be done with at least that,

Get this fool away from your car. He has no clue what he is doing. There is only one way it can be wired and any tech worth anything can wire it correctly by simply following a wiring diagram or checking the wires with a meter.

Changing the type of sensor was even dumber. He just eliminated the IAT signal.

Get the right sensor, buy a new pigtail and find a competent tech to wire it back up correctly.

hi

thank you for replying.

car diagnostic reads something like, maf range performance or maf open circuit.

It may prove difficult to find a whole wiring harness for my car from a scrapyard or anywhere, besides , Brian says the current wiring harness on my car is probably the wrong one and says he cannot find the diagram wiring anywhere for my car.

I am from UK and my car is a 2006 mk2 ford focus sport 1.8 TDCI

The problem thickens: Now you don't know if what was there was already messed up before this - great!
If it ever worked properly 100% and could pass your MOT test then I would still seek the pigtail end that you know is screwed up and the correct part you or this "Brian" car killer messed with - keep him away from the solution now.
This site is US based and this car not sold here in a UK version at all.
By "pigtail" I mean the plug end that did work once that failed to get another now almost only used and can't know availability for that for you. That you go yourself and cut off with plenty of wire from a wrecked car of the same that worked on this one.
Careful with all this. You can mess this car up so bad it will never pass your MOT test and be the next parts car if screwed up as you described already,

You can probably just buy the pig tail at your local Ford dealer. I suggest you have a professional install it. You really don't need Brian somehow wiring it wrong, so it takes out your engine controller. Once it is installed correctly, maybe the tech can troubleshoot it for you since they will have the scanners and experience to do that.

Hi

I guess so. Brian said that the wires looked to be the wrong amount or wrong color or color sequence or something, he said he has tried searching all over the internet and could not find a wiring diagram
So he began guessing and using connectors he had a go at swapping the colors around, and at the moment the car seems to be working a bit better, not stalling anymore e.t.c. but it still has problems and if revved to hard it will thud and refuse to accelerate.

So by pigtail do you mean the maf plug end ? Will I be able to put the original 6 pin maf sensor back on when the maf plug ( or pigtail ) wired back on ?

I don't know what colors I would need from the scrapyard though, as if my friend is right that it was wrong before he started on it I might need different colors.

Hi

By pig tail do you mean the plug end for the maf sensor ? ( I'm from UK, so I am unfamiliar with some words that Americans use)

If I get hold of a maf plug and get it wired up , would I then be able to replace the 4 pin maf sensor and put the original 6 pin maf sensor back on ?

once it is wired up then I have the problem of knowing what the sequence order is, what colors should they be, how many colors there should be, I really need to find the correct mass air flow wiring harness for my specific car type.

Just use the word "reply" to post as site can be funky.
OK: "pigtail" common word for a wiring end in US English - may be confused by that.
Sold like this if you could find exact end with wires to the MAF sensor that belongs there.........

^^^^ Picture of one was there.
You would find the cut wires on your car color for color like one above for something just a sample picture - go it?
New or used the one that was cut off/broken and match it up.
Now you would strip wire insulation off each end from pigtail and to the wiring harness of the car, install shrink tubing for later. Solder the bare copper (usually) wire neatly together on each one wire color to wire color.
Then with sometimes just a good hair blow drier after you slide shrink tubing over the exposed wires that are soldered and heat the tubing it should shrink tight as the new insulation over the repair.
Then you should have known it was the correct one way before this it should plug in to the MAF sensor that worked and matches the wiring of the car. May not solve a thing alone but now you have something you can diagnose from if that alone doesn't solve the problems.
I tried to explain that in as plain English as I know and if just nick-names of parts is messing up you understanding this should explain it.
This can still be difficult and require tools you don't have yet so it has already been suggested to let a professional do it.
This should be done with the negative battery cable disconnected at the battery so it has no chance of being powered while doing anything but probably already was?
