New battery min voltage Sign In

I've been burned before with new batteries that are half dead. I want to take my multimeter and test before I buy. What's the minimum voltage a new battery should have? Thanks for any help.

Re: New battery min voltage Sign In

That won't tell you anything about the health of the battery. A fully charged battery is 12.6v but you likely won't find one sitting on the shelf fully charged unless it was just done. That doesn't mean the battery is not healthy.

What you should watch for is a sticker with a letter and a number. That indicates the battery got stale on the shelf and was removed, recharged and re-dated for warranty and put back on the shelf. It basically means the battery has been on the shelf longer than 6 months. The original build date code is engraved into the housing.
