More car problems, I got into my Jeep today after work I turn the key but the engine wont start and the starter wont turn. I called my friend and we tried several things and finally the last thing he told me to try was to put the Jeep in neutral and try starting it, all went well. He thinks I am having problems with my neutral safety switch, does this sound accurate? BTW we just put a use tranny in about 2 weeks ago.

Yep, sounds like he's on the right track. The switch could be adjustable also so check that before you replace it.

Would you recommend cleaning and adjust the switch or would it be cheaper to get a brand new one. I checked the price this morning and they are only 13 bucks.

Cleaning isn't an issue but definitely try adjusting it. Even if you replace it, you will have to adjust the new one.
It should rotate on the screws to determine what position on the gearshift it engages. It may just be missing park. Adjust it so it's centered on neutral.

As long as you can get it started, it's not a problem but it may get worse than it is now and not start at all.

Ok guys I had the neutral safety switch put in about 2 weeks ago and the jeep was great but this morning it did the same thing, before I had the switch put it in it was giving me problems once a week so I assumed I was good to go when I didnt have any problems for two weeks. I took it back to the shop that put the switch in they think I have problems with my gear box, every time he would put the gear box in reverse and back to park the jeep wouldnt start, he did push the gear box into park a little harder and it started. Any thoughts?

Wow you are great, my friend who lives 60mins away who put my tranny in said the same thing. I think the guys in my city didnt want to adjust it for me because the first thing he said its not under warranty since I used my own part he immediately said it's not my neutral safety switch. I may just take it to a different shop and pay the 30 bucks to have it adjusted. I tried to save 10-20 bucks by taking it to some Mexican guys instead of going to the shop i trust in my city.

1: Why don't you think it's not the gear box?

2: How much is to adjust the switch etc?

Either the shift linkage has too much play in it so the switch is being left behind or the switch is out of adjustment. Just go get it checked.


Took it to the shop, no way to adjust the switch on a 2001 jeep and there was no linkage problems either. We open the grooves on the connector so it could make better contact, I will drive it for a week or so and see how things go, they think I got a bad switch and need to replace it.
