My mate broke my 12v lighter socket. Sign In

My annoying mate asked me if my lighter works in my van. As I don't smoke I said "I don't know, try it."
That was the stupidest move ever.
He pushed the lighter in but it wouldn't stay in. So he held it in and it heated up. He did this twice, but the second time he held it in too long and it got quite hot.
I have just replaced my 3 way adapter which I need for work. (as a courier I need to charge my satnav, phone and parcel scanner simultaneously). Now the socket doesn't work!!!

What has he done to it? i need to fix it ASAP!

Thanks in advance.

Probably just blew a fuse. Test all the fuses using a test light.

As HT just said this should be just a blown fuse.

So called lighters for smoking are junk as power ports so replace it or add one properly as a 12v port for devices,

Thanks

See if I can get a pic to show.............

OK - same size as a real lighter but will not heat an element but rather made for this universal source for 12v power - devices of all types and better contacts inside so works better.

Just tried for a part # with no luck. Many styles that one sold at Walmart, Autozone or places like that mostly in sections that also sell lighting things for camping, boating and automotive as well.

That exact one fits the OE hole for most real lighters or wire and fuse one as the port you want for whatever and skip the cig lighter that came with the car. Not the point but real lighters frequently fail if used for lighting a cigar or cigarette as the junk can just ground them out, corroded them and stay damp so nuts but never use a vehicles lighter to light a cigarette as they will fail quickly. Plug real ones off so nothing can fall in them if they aim downwards especially,

A lighter socket and a power port do the exact same thing. The only difference is the power port isn't designed to take any heat and the lighter socket is.

Said - power port will work better for power as it doesn't have vents so device (cell phone, GPS or whatever) will get power the first try not needing to fuss. Again, the port will not heat a lighter not meant to at all. Cheap bucks, just use the parts needed to fit from that kit shown is my favorite style,
