Jump started car, now battery is completely dead next day Sign In

My father jump started a 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander (4 cylinder) with a 2005 Ford Expedition (8 cylinder). He made all the connection to both batteries and then revved up the engine and the Outlander eventually started. The next day the Expedition battery was completely dead. Nothing came on. He took the battery down to Autozone and they put it on a charge for almost 2 hours and said that the battery was fine. He put the battery back in the Expedition and it started up. Without driving the Expedition anywhere, the next day the battery is nearly completely dead again (interior lights don't even come on).

The outside temp has been between 20 - 25 degrees Fahrenheit (if it matters).

Could it just be that the 2 hour charge is not nearly enough charge to last the night? What should we try?

Thanks for any help.

Trying to figure out who's on first with this. Sounds like the Outlander was dead and Expedition jumped it - right? If Outlander was dead enough it could have wildly taxed the charging system of donor car killing the alternator so it now has a problem.

Dead batteries can freeze (not cold enough with what you posted) and short/crack so you don't want to jump those. You try to charge them, test them. Donor cars are at risk and both alternators if charging systems are working work hard. Much better to use jumper boxes than another vehicle or charge battery with a charger, test it and find out if why it went low to begin with. Sometimes just a light left on, sometimes a real problem and need to know. Any reason, lead/acid batteries do not like going dead and that alone can kill one,

Thank you. :) And yes, the Outlander had a dead battery right after Safelite replaced a broken back window.

I have a battery charger in the garage somewhere, so I'm going to put it on trickle charge over night. I'll have the alternator checked as well.

Yes - Trickle charge it to save battery if possible. Check whole charging system not just alternator. What window got replaced? Rear doors or side windows shouldn't have much to do with a dead battery. Reading lamp switches can or power ports if involved at all with window replacement? Maybe if rear hatch a light should come on and didn't go out?? Could just be a coincidence too??

Odd thought but a maybe: Did anything get wet or covered in snow with a broken window completely out?

Stay warm,

Thanks for you help Tom. I figured out the problem a while back and forgot to post a follow-up. I took the battery to Autozone (again), they told me the battery was bad, so I bought a new battery, but the problem persisted. I then took the alternator to them and they said it was bad, so I bought a new (or rebuilt) one from them, but the problem persisted. I then bought an ammeter and found that I had a parasitic draw (Ford Expedition). I removed the fuse for the rear wiper (which I noticed wasn't working) and the draw went away, and I haven't had the problem since. I'm going to need to swap out the rear wiper.

The best! I spent $360 for the battery and alternator. It seems like almost every time I take something to them, they tell me it's bad. One time I took an alternator in there and the machine said it tested fine in front of my eyes, but the guy told me that it only had about another month of life and that I should just buy one.

Although, considering that my battery was completely drained, maybe the battery did go bad?..

The best way to test an alternator is with it on the vehicle using a volt meter. Sometimes an alternator may test good on the bench, but doesn't work on the vehicle.

It's possible the battery was hurt when it was discharged completely, so can't really crack on them for that.

I guess Autozone salespeople are fortune tellers or they have x ray vision to see inside alternators.

Agreed that once battery has gone dead they don't always recover well or at all OR can freeze.

Too bad about the bucks. For just over $10 bucks you can get a voltmeter with lights - just plug in power port pointing anyway you wish and shows red (trouble) amber (low) or green (all is within voltage perimeters) right thru a window you can see it - same place has them, the ZONE!
