Ignition won't turn to "off" position in park, difficult shifter button

I have a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am GT that has recently been having ignition and shifter problems. The other night, I had trouble depressing the shift button on the lever, but it eventually gave way with significant pressure. The problem is not that the switch is not "released" by the brake pedal, it is just difficult to press (as if something is making it stick). At the same time, my ignition has also been giving me trouble. Even when the car is in park, the ignition will not allow me to put the key into the "off" position and remove it. The car stops running, but I cannot turn the key to the first setting to release it. I jiggle the key and the shifter around and it will eventually release, but I can't seem to figure out what I am doing that makes it come out. I'm wondering if this problem is related to the gear shift or the ignition? Both problems began occurring simultaneously, and it seems to be an issue with detecting that the car is in park. Any help would be appreciated.

You will have too take the console apart to investigate here. There is a solenoid that unlocks the shifter and a cable that connects the shifter to the ignition switch to allow it to lock. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
