My son has a 1998 Pontiac Gran Prix with no heater fan running. I thought it might be the switch so I replaced it, still nothing. I removed the heater fan and tested it directly to the battery, works fine. What I found is that the short 4" wire that plugs into the heater fan wire does not appear to have power to it. That wire is connected to a box that appears to have a circuit board attached. My questions is can that box with the circuit board by tested either inside or outside the car and what is it called so I know what it is I'm asking for when I phone to see what the cost of a new one is.

The box with the circuit board is the blower motor resistor. That can only be obtained thru the GM dealer. It's usually about $30. I only have a wiring diagram for a 2002 here at home. Unplug the connector at the resistor. It should have 5 wires going to it. Put a test light from ground to the orange wire and turn the fan to high. If the test light glows, replace resistor. If you remove the resistor and look at the board, you should have 3 coils and a black relay. This relay is more than likely the problem. If the relay is burned out, you won't have any power going to the blower motor on any speed. Even the High speed by-pass has to go through this relay.

You were correct, it was the resistor, not easy to get at. It was $37.00 at the GM dealer. All is well, thanks very much. All the best in this holiday season.
