I have a 2003 Mazda 6. I've owned it for 2 years and had no problems.

The problems started last week, as follows:
Tuesday: drove 300km (185miles) home from a holiday. About 5 minutes from home, all of the instrument gauges stopped working. Speedo, tacho, odometer and fuel gauge. The blinkers didn't work, headlights seemed to be fine.

Wednesday: replaced fuse for instrument gauges which fixed my problem. I had previously noticed that my left headlight seemed to be dull. That fuse also needed replacing.

Friday: air-conditioner started blowing hot air (its the middle of summer in Aus)

Didn't drive all weekend

Monday: everything seemed fine, except for the air con not working. Drove 5 minutes from home and the gauges drop out again. Sure enough the fuse had blown. Replaced fuse and started car to check, all fine. I went to drive home a few hours later, and as soon as I started the car I saw the gauges drop again.
I noticed Monday night that my tail lights were out.

Tuesday (today): I decided to check all the fuses in both compartments. The fuses blown were: left headlight low beam, left headlight main, brake tail and number plate lights, and the instrument gauge fuse.
I replaced all of these fuses and tried to recreate the gauge fuse blowing but testing to see if the headlights, blinkers or air con affected it. I drove around town for 20 minutes, stopped and started a few times. Everything was fine, except for the air con blowing hot air.

I just arrived home and turned off the car, and pulled the keys out. The car stayed on. I could rev the engine with no keys in the ignition. The car only turned off when I turned the headlights off. If the headlights were off when I pulled the key out, everything was normal. If the lights were on, the car stayed on until I pulled them out. Here's a video I just took. Has this vehicle been wrecked or any previous work done prior to this problem. Any aftermarket equipment installed such as alarms or remote start?

I would guess you have some sort of wiring problem causing a short to ground and blowing fuses. It also seems that power is back feeding from the headlamp circuit into the ignition circuit which can keep the engine running even when the ignition is turned off.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

It was a shorted enging bay harness near engine cleaner, with burnt wiring. They made up a new section of harness and repaired the wiring. A/C pipe was ruptured by the shorted harness. Hose will be repaired and air con filled with gas.
