FIAT DOBLO 1.2 MULTIJET, 2005, 108,000 miles
Got a problem with my flashing indicators. Well the nearside ones anyway! The offside flashers work fine, but when I operate the nearside ones the dashboard indicator flashers twice as fast normal. On inspection, the 3 lights concerned, i.e. front and rear indicators plus the side indicator are only flashing intermittently, and then very dimly.
What I've done is this: renewed all 3 bulbs, cleaned the electrical contacts as best I could and removed any moisture that was present. This appeared to work......for about 15 seconds at least, then back to the above!
I'm now working on the assumption that it could be the relay/flasher unit. My questions are:
a) How many relays/flasher units are there? I'm guessing only one as it seems to operate ok when the offside flashers are working.
b) What is the location of the relay/flasher? There are 5 relays on the internal fuse box, but removal of these makes no difference, as I can still hear the clicking noise when the nearside flashers are operating.
c) Are there any other reasons to consider that might have caused the flashers to go faulty?

You have a problem at the lights. The flasher is fine.
You either have a bulb out or possibly a ground problem.

Sorry I wouldn't know this car if in my lap but some things somewhat universal. By "Flashers" you mean directional, one side to indicated a turn or lane change? That or hazard flashing where all would flash?
New bulbs worked for that short while so there's a clue there. That would point me to a bad socket. If same flashing speed on both sides when used separately the flasher itself may be the problem. If no location info is easy to find for it and you hear it then feel for it in hand while ticking away.
Some are well hidden in assorted vehicles usually under dash and not necessarily on or in the fuse box inside if applicable,

John,
You mentioned you cleaned things up from moisture. If really wet that's a problem. I'd begin working on the ones that were wet if you recall which ones taking a hard look at the socket contacts both where bulb goes in and backside. They make "bulb" grease or dialectic grease that really does help.
Fast flashing can be excessive load for any reason. Sometimes when bulbs burn out flashing can be slower or not flash at all. That is if this car is using common basic designs of a lot of assorted makes.
If you find a bad socket you may need to ask around for a new "pig tail" end to solder in. You may use another term for things like that,

The flashing rate of the flasher is determined by how many bulbs it is operating. When it loses a bulb from the circuit, it flashes faster, assuming everything else in the circuit is OK so I would look for which bulb isn't flashing on that side. If they are all working but not illuminating completely, look for a poor ground connection.

Many thanks T G and H T for your very helpful suggestions, but not good news I'm afraid! Many hours of grafting plus help from neighbours and still can't find the answer. Booked in to my local garage this Friday. Will let you know the result! :(
