Electrical problems from removing aftermarket gauge Sign In

Hello everyone,

I'm having a seemingly strange electrical problem with my 2004 Acura RSX. The car came with two aftermarket gauges that were mounted on the side pillar. I decided to remove them because they weren't working when I bought the car and they don't look good. So I bought the replacement interior piece. I removed the two aftermarket gauges (oil pressure, air/fuel ratio) from the side pillar. With the engine off I cut and capped the wires going to the gauges separately. Everything seemed fine, but I soon realized the tail lights and accessory lights inside weren't working anymore. Why would cutting and capping a power wire do this? I wonder if the previous owner wired this up in a strange way. Any advice on how to troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Did the gauges have back lighting? If so, you either created a short and or an open in the running light circuit. Check your fuse for the tail lamps. Find out where those wires go or are spliced. Maybe that will answer your question.

Hi, thanks for the response. Yes, one of the gauges did have back lighting. I forgot to mention that I reconnected the wires and my tail lights and dashboard lights worked again. So I think that might mean that I didn't create a short. I'm not familiar with what creating an open in the running light circuit is though. I'm going to look for where these wires splice behind the panels. What can I do to safely disconnect the gauge if I find the splice point?

I've uploaded a picture of the problem:

Just FYI "open" when talking wiring is like disconnected or cut. A short is power (or ground item) wire touching something thru usually worn thru wire insulation or any reason power or ground is escaping where intended.

Love the pic! Leave it that way I think it looks fashionable - not!
