Hey guys, I've got a tendency to ramble sometimes so I'll cut to the chase first this time: does this starter seem bad/need replacing?
https://www.4shared.com/video/XN19kKJDiq/20210212_001148.html
If the linked video isn't clear enough I can try and make another video and I've got a basic multimeter to show voltage change if needed (I tried doing a voltage drop test but not sure if I did it correctly,  I did do a test with multimeter attached to battery and volts jumped to 13 then 16 a few times but stayed around normal range other times).
Someone told me they had starting issues with their Transit and it turned out to be the starter killing the amps in the battery or something. This starter seems to spin fine but the pinion seems to jut out the top more than any starter in any video I've seen on YouTube about testing a starter and I'm not sure if the bearing sounds worn. Before I took the starter out I hooked a new 550cca battery to the in car battery and starter wouldn't even crank. I'm basically trying to find out if this starter definitely needs replacing before I put it back in and try testing the ignition coil instead.

Here's all the info and I'll log back in to edit/add any details left out:
Year of vehicle: 1980
Make of vehicle: Ford
Model of vehicle: Transit Mk II
Engine size: 6 cyl inline petrol but not sure of specifics as there were 4 petrol variants of MKII
Mileage/Kilometers: 66945km on the dial but it's 40 years old so probably gone round a few times

The story:
Got the van about 5 years ago and it started having starting problems not long after which I put down to an old battery that wasn't holding charge. It also had a bad replacement headlight switch which gave me some trouble so I started cutting back on driving it regularly. The trouble starting issue got worse until van wouldn't start at all so I bought a new 665cca battery but then it started having a "cranks but won't kick over" issue.
My dad is an ex diesel mechanic and took the distributor to an auto electrician he knew to test and it's fine and replaced all the spark plugs but still wouldn't start. Unfortunately the van got put in the "too hard" basket getting rusty for years but it's never leaked a drop of oil so recently I decided to try getting it going but so got a mobile mechanic out to diagnose the problem for $100. The mechanic told me the battery in the car had "no amps" and had connected jumper wires to get it to crank but not kick over. He said the engine had compression and the fuel pump seemed okay and "it needs a rewiring". He wrote in the report, "Suspect vehicle has no spark-possible wiring issue as wiring inside vehicle is a mess. Requires-Battery Replaced + Auto electrician to rewire".
So I bought a brand new 550cca battery and have tried contacting lots of local different mechanics and auto electricians saying I needed it "rewired" (at least 8 and multiple people through a site called Airtasker) and had pretty much no luck at all. A few back and forthed via email before cutting off contact,  a few refused to get back to me after multiple attempts, one eventually got back to me and said he refused to work on cars older than 25 years, another agreed to do the job then asked for a photo of the engine bay and said it looked "too dirty" and he mostly did after market add-ons. Only help I got at all was one guy on Airtasker saying he'd had similar issue with his Transit and he'd owned 3 of them and it was the starter drawing amps from the battery. He'd agreed to come have a look but haven't heard from him in a week.
I took the 665cca battery that apparently had "no amps" and needed replacing out of the van and to a local auto center for testing and it came back as "good" (with 590cca I think) and the guy there got really confused when I told him what the mobile mechanic had said and more confused when I said I hadn't charged the battery since the mechanic had been.
I'm just baffled why it's been so hard to find someone to fix it since it's an old vehicle with no computers in it so it shouldn't be too difficult.
So there it is, whole long story, I've really gotta get it moving from where it's parked at my folks and my folks just want me to sell it for scrap but it's a unique looking vehicle and I feel like I'm "pot committed" to get it going after all these of having it.
I'd deeply appreciate any help at all I can get with this as it looks like I've gotta fix it myself, I'm really hoping it's either the starter or the ignition coil as I can replace both of those-if it is the wiring I'm not sure what to do next.
Thanks heaps for bothering to read all of that.

You may not be having much luck getting a mechanic to look at it but that may have a lot to do with your approach, trying to get free info.
The bottom line is you need a mechanic to do some electrical testing. Saying it needs rewiring is just too general and doesn't tell us anything.

We just can't diagnose a problem like this over the Internet without seeing and testing things first.

PS, your video was impossible to view. It wants us to register and download and we aren't doing that.

😕 this is the bit where I'm in the impossible position of trying to argue against a mod who can just bully and ban.
Why does your sig say "We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice" if you're just going to attack people posting looking for that saying they're wanting "free advice"?
I tried contacting 8 different mechanics and auto electricians repeating what I was told that it "needs a rewiring" and just asked for a quote and got no help at all, so now I need advice on what to do so try and folllow your guidelines and put as much information as possible and you give me Sh!t about my approach?

You seriously couldn't bother with any advice at all and you're a forum mod that can't work out 4Shared? I can view it easily logged out of my 4shared account, and even if I had to register it takes less time than registering here takes and it's a 44mb file.

I just don't get why mechanics have to be like this.

You are upset and I apologize for that if disappointed here:

Please know this is a US based site and not even sure this vehicle was ever sold here 40 years ago is also a diesel isn't so popular as it is elsewhere.

Saw that video ONCE before it attacked me! That's why we don't want to join clubs to see what you are showing. It showed a starter motor turning on floor using a screwdriver means it did that much not that it could crank an engine but good clue with enough AMPS it probably would.

If easy enough I think I'd put it back and with a jumper box later first see how much it drops power from the primary battery and again with extra AMPS from a jumper box. It's probably OK to use another vehicle as old and super high quality jumper cables. If not available use two sets.

I find newly rebuilt ones are more new paint on the traded in ones than really fixed adds to the problem. Keep old ones if you go there and get core charge $ back later when known fixed.

Sorry for you troubles and angst here I speak for myself.

If not all just me about the FREE aspect here: It cost me a lot to maintain a device to do this and still make typos out of control settings here are messed up it doesn't do that elsewhere AND I DON'T MAKE A DIME FROM THIS JOINT going on about 19 years of this stuff just this place!

Carry on,

Tom

This entitled attitude of yours is likely exactly why you can't find any help.

You come to a forum where professional mechanics donate their time and you think you can cop an attitude with them because you don't like what you hear. We have resolved issues for literally thousands of people needing help with diagrams and step by step instructions but we just don't put up with abuse or attitudes.

Well, this is where your free help at this site comes to an end.
