Do I HAVE TO put a horn relay in? Sign In

I bought a Oooga Horn for my pontoon and it shows a Horn Relay being put into the circuit.

I was planning to install a Momentary Push button, an inline fuse, and then the horn.

Do I "Have To" put a horn relay in also? What is the REAL purpose of the relay?

I'll be wrong at something with this but a relay is a way to use a lighter duty switch/button and wiring to remotely allow heavier gauge wiring to make the real contact. Horns do use some juice.

A wild extreme would be why not run full gauge battery cables right to your ignition key and on to starter motor! Can you imagine.

In your case if the horn button is rated for the power that would pass thru it then fine and just fuse it. If a "pontoon" is some vehicle with horn in steering wheel or column it probably would harm the contacts in anything I know of,

Yes, relays are needed to be able to run low current through a switch to operate a high current component.

Sorry.... a pontoon is a boat with two or three pontoons then seats and usually an out-board motor.

I am planning to put the push button switch on the dash where all the other switches are located. The pontoon currently has a horn which is not loud. I want to add the Oooga Horn just to have some fun at times.

Same answer. It should be wired with a relay.

I WILL do it with a relay then.

Thank you for the diagram also. Looks better than the one included with the horn.

Sorry back about the word "pontoon" which is just a device not necessarily a boat. Bridges, floating walkways - who knows? Pay extra attention for a watercraft. Marine grade switching and special attention to grounding items. No sparks near fuel anything and so on. Do it right goes for about anything,
