Celica gt door lock motors fried Sign In

Hello,
I have a 1989 Celica GT and the other day both electric door lock motors started smoking at the same time. I had to take the door panels off and unplug the motors to stop them smoking. Now the doors are locked and won't open either with a key or from the inside. Any ideas on the problem and if necessary, is it possible to by-pass the electric door locks and just lock/unlock the doors manually?? Thanks, Ian

Bypass isn't necessary. It should work both ways already. Something has to be jammed up which you will have to determine.

Thank you for your reply,
Could you let me know where this jam is most likely to occur and how could it jam both of the locks at the same time?
Thanks

I have no idea what happened. You're going to have to pull one apart and investigate.

The solenoids are probably jammed. A door lock switch or door lock relay hanging would keep the solenoids turned on. If they were smoking they are probably shot and melted, so you can't unlock the doors manually. If you have a volt meter or test lamp check to see if the door locks are being activated all the time. If this has a remote alarm system tied into the door locks make sure that isn't the cause.

Thanks for your answer,
Before I can actually start checking the solenoids I need to remove the door panels witch can only be done when the door is open, Being that the door is locked shut I am kinda in a pickle. Any suggestions on how I can unlock my door manually without taking off the panel?

How long would the battery last under those circumstances?

What would happen when the battery went dead?

How long would the door lock actuators need to stay on till they got hot enough to start smoking?

It would only be a matter of time before they either blew a fuse or killed the battery and released.

Well, if they were smoking that means something was melting, so obviously the battery didn't die or the fuse didn't pop before this happened. The OP never stated if the door locks were smoking while he/she were driving either.

I don't know if the door locks were smoking while I was driving, I just noticed it when I stopped. I disconnected the locks from the battery and they still didn't unlock so I'm guessing that their melted, How could I open the door with the locks being melted in the locked position?

Not sure. You might have to remove the door panel, so you can get into the door and see if you can get to the latch to see if you can get it to unlock.

The door panel may not come off with the door shut, so you might have to damage the panel to get it off. Sometimes you can pry the top of the door panel off the belt molding edge to pull it down enough to get in there. Take out as many door panel mounting screws as you can.

Re: Celica gt door lock motors fried Sign In

IDK for this car but some if lock actuators if just froze up for any reason the thing stayed where it was, locked or open. All I dealt with that did that was just one door not fried like this deal. It's tricky but you can get most door panels off with the door shut OR maybe someone real good with a Slim Jim can force it open and probably break a plastic clip but you have to do something. Should be a rod of some sort to it and just remove it for now and will work manually.

Gotta do something with this problem of course,

T
