Car will turn over but not fire! Sign In

Been working on my car all summer..long story..started with no heat.... changed heating core, radiator, thermostat, .....now last thing I had to do was change Blower Motor...This was a task as well as I had to remove my Alternator in order to do this....Well spent a few days doing it..on second day I was get flustered with it....and just wanted to get it done...so was a bit rushed and didnt disconnect my battery while installing Alternator!...So what happened is.. I presume my Ground wire hit the top of my Motor causing a spark..because it wasnt connected to my Alternator... The Other wire maybe have been connect...can't remember..Sorta closed my eyes when it happened as it surprised me..think it was also sparking (smoking)(bit of burn rubber smell I guess)...down close to radiator...perhaps location of starter?.. Well I got everything changed eventually and went to start car but it turns over just doesnt fire up...I did check all my fuses ..underneath hood and interior..but didnt find anything burnt out!!...
After doing research on the net to try and find out problem... some people gave me few idea's ...One was to reset Security or something like that... Don't think that is it though... as it seems like long process and long time to leave lights on in car..waiting for it to go out....So after checking fuses a few times thought id switch them around as I dont have Multi meter...so cant check them that way only by sight!...well I fiqured If i change same amp with signal..and signal dont work then they fuse is no good.....Well what I discovered maybe by fluke.. I dunno Signal wasnt working when key in on position..so I kept switching key to on off position tell I could maybe get them to come on..and when they did.. I could tell I had a spark then..... so I fiqured i would turn key back to on position and wait for few minutes as I did that signal came on again .. so I started it up...and Worked but ... Battery Warning Light stay's On!!.. I didnt want to run car like that...so just turned it around and shut it off!... So not sure if I have a short (Ground wire faulty) Fusible link shot? Alternator no good?...or a switch or something?...I must of fried something ... Any responces would be appreciated..ty for reading!!.
oh yeah lol sorry Car is older ..1997 Olds mobile Achieva 3.1....6cyl....

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Ty for the Response...Yeah your right... I was hoping I could get a good guess out of it..kinda narrow it down..with the tool's your describing sounds like a job for a Mechanic! I Always try myself first ..but when it comes to the electrical part of it.. I was never close to a genius at that..lol...Thx again.

There are no shortcuts and we don't make uninformed wild guesses. The spark tester and noid light can be bought for under $10. Most auto parts stores will loan or rent a fuel pressure gauge.
